May update 2025

Published Sat 31 May 2025

Our senior women continue to show the way for the Football Section, having won the second and third games of the season. They now sit just below the top 4 in 5th position on the ladder. The side is thriving under our new co-coaches, Taiya Morrow and Keeley Hardingham, and showing plenty of growth in their competitiveness. The very top sides are extremely strong and it will take more work to bridge the gap, but the signs are very bright for the team.

Our senior men’s squad have found the going tougher over the first six rounds. It is a reminder to everyone at the club about how strong the GFNL actully is, particularly for our young group. We regularly put sides on the ground containing a number of teenagers, with more than half the team aged under 21. Our coaches continue to work with our players to improve their skills and fitness while building experience through accruing games. The mood of the group is still very good while our results are trending better week by week.

This weeked sees the bye round for the senior men. Our senior women are still playing this week, with an away match versus Barwon Heads on Friday night. Good luck!

Our juniors have gone through the grading process with our U18, U16 and U14 boys and U14 girls sides in Division 2, and our U16 girls in Division 1. We wish them all the best with their seasons.

Our Past Players and Supporters function occurred during our last home game against Bell Park. The organisers were very pleased with the attendance, while Doug Hawkins was a big hit as the guest speaker for the day. After the match, a group of our football and netballs players organised the Snake Drop function for Saturday evening to generate funds for the club. The function was well supported and attended as well.  Well done to both sets of organisers for their work.

Our next senior men’s home game on June 7 sees us play Leopold at Bisinella Oval. This will be our sponsors’ day as well. LFNC’s sponsors are incredibly important to our club and we thank them for their support. If you see them on the day, please make them feel welcome.

A note to all members that the Non Playing Captains is now an official coterie group for the club. We encourage all past members of Top Cats and/or the 250 Club to join this group and continue to support the Football Section as we strive to increase competitiveness across all grades and genders. If you’d like to join, look for Chambo, Pyney, Dane or Scott at our next senior game or ask our volunteers at the Can Bar for help.

If there are any boys or girls who are still thinking about playing this year, whether in Auskick or an older grade, parents can contact the club to find out more about our junior programs. We’d love to see as many local juniors as possible playing in the Cats’ colours this year.

Until next time, go Cats!
