Sun-safe hat with chin strap, sunscreen, filled refillable water bottle, sunglasses (optional), closed-toe water shoes (don’t need to be expensive sailing boots but must stay on your feet on rocky shores — no thongs or crocs!), clothes you can get wet in (long-sleeve rash shirt and leggings recommended), dry clothes to change into after you get wet, towel, windproof jacket (recommended), snacks and lunch (if not provided), personal medication (e.g., asthma puffer, EpiPen) (for adults - small personal first aid kit) ,sailing gloves (optional), lifejacket (if you have your own — otherwise provided), and dry bag for personal items (optional).
Social Sailing & Paddling Event Waiver
By registering for and participating in a Deaf Sailing Queensland (DSQ) sailing, kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) or other water-based activity, I acknowledge and agree to the following:
Acknowledgement of Risk
I understand that sailing and paddling activities involve inherent risks. These may include changing weather and water conditions, slips and falls, capsizing, falling into the water, collisions with other people, vessels or objects, equipment failure, injury and other risks associated with water-based activities.
I voluntarily choose to participate and understand that I am responsible for participating within my own abilities and experience.
Safety Requirements
I agree to:
- Follow all reasonable safety instructions provided by DSQ, the venue, activity leaders, instructors and volunteers.
- Wear a personal flotation device (PFD/lifejacket) whenever required or instructed.
- Use equipment appropriately and report any damaged or unsafe equipment.
- Remain within designated activity areas and follow instructions about where and when activities may take place.
- Behave responsibly and not place myself or others at unnecessary risk.
DSQ may restrict or stop a person's participation if their actions may create a safety risk to themselves or others.
Health & Medical Information
I am responsible for advising DSQ of any relevant medical condition, allergy, injury, disability, medication or other information that may affect my safe participation in the activity.
If required in an emergency, I authorise DSQ to arrange reasonable first aid or emergency assistance.
Weather & Activity Changes
I understand that sailing and paddling activities depend on suitable weather, water and safety conditions.
Activities may be changed, postponed or cancelled if DSQ or the activity leaders determine that conditions are unsuitable or unsafe.
Participants should check DSQ communications, including the DSQ Facebook page, before leaving home for updates about weather, conditions or changes to the event.
Equipment
I understand that I am responsible for using my own equipment safely and ensuring that privately owned equipment I bring to an activity is suitable for its intended use.
When using DSQ equipment, I agree to follow instructions regarding its safe use and return the equipment after use.
Participant Acknowledgement
By agreeing to this Event Waiver and submitting my registration, I confirm that:
I have read and understood the information above, acknowledge the risks associated with participating in sailing and paddling activities, and agree to follow DSQ's safety requirements and reasonable instructions.
For participants under 18 years of age, a parent or legal guardian must provide consent for participation.
