Deaf Sailing Queensland (DSQ) organises Deaf cohorts to participate in external certificate courses within a culturally and linguistically safe environment. 

The Safety Boat Operator Certificate course is designed for those wanting to support sailing activities through rescue operations, coaching support, and regatta management.

This course is ideal for volunteers, club officials, race management teams, and community members who already hold a powerboat licence and want to expand their skills for on-water safety duties.

 

What Will You Learn?

  • Roles and responsibilities of a safety boat operator

  • Techniques for assisting dinghies, catamarans, and windsurfers

  • Rescue skills, including capsize recovery and towing

  • Communication protocols during regattas and training sessions

Prerequisites

  • Must hold a valid Powerboat Handling Certificate (Australian Sailing)

  • Valid state-recognised Recreational Marine Licence (e.g. QLD RMDL)

  • Minimum age: 16 years

  • Basic experience handling a powerboat
