Our Teams

Hurricanes Softball Club aims to actively promote member participation in the following competitions:

Progressive Development of Players

Hurricanes Softball Club aims to increase player participation across all grades and competitions. We support both social players and those that aspire to to play representative softball

We aim to do this by:

  • encouraging enjoyable, safe, inclusive and challenging playing experiences for all players to support long lasting participation in our sport
  • enabling all players to equally (both during training and games) acquire developmentally appropriate general and softball specific fitness and skills
  • providing a pathway to elite sport
  • building individual confidence and team unity

How we allocate players to Junior's teams:

Our goal is to create teams where every player enjoys their softball, develops their skills and feels part of a supportive group. Our approach has been refined over several seasons through member feedback, retention results and coaching experience.

General principles we follow:

  • We prefer to field more teams with fewer players per team so everyone gets more on-field time.

  • Players are generally placed in their age group. Some may “play up” (or occasionally down) depending on readiness, representative commitments, or team needs.

  • Representative players may be given opportunities to play across more than one team to build experience.

  • We consider sibling requests and battery pairings in addition to coach and family input, while also ensuring teams remain balanced.

  • Families are contacted directly if preferences can’t be met and coaches are consulted during team planning.

Division guidelines:

  • T-Ball (U8): Seven players per team, in line with competition rules. This maximises time on the field and helps build confidence. Training is offered on Saturdays before games.

  • T-Ball (U10): 10–11 players per team. This ensures teams are strong enough for competition but keeps benches manageable.

  • Junior Softball (U12): Around 11 players per team. This balance provides enough depth while ensuring players get sufficient game time, particularly those preparing for representative tournaments.

  • High School Divisions (HSD2 and HSD1): Teams are generally 11 players. When players are absent, fill-ins come from the division below. Representative players may also play across two teams to support their development.

This approach is reviewed each season to keep improving fairness, enjoyment, and development across all our teams.

Overview of a player's potential pathway through our Club:

Within the brackets, Hurricanes participated in Club level competition. Progress is dictated by age, ability and preference (as indiciated by the broken lines). To the left of the bracket, opportunities for elite level participation are presented. These opportunities begin with the U12 cohort.  To the right of the bracket are social development opportunities that may be engaged in from tee ball through to Senior grades.
