Summer Sports Program

 

The summer sports Dragon Boat program ensures all levels of participation are available to schools, from participation teams up to those wishing to attend further races such as the National competition. 

 

On water training can begin from 2nd October 2023. Note you can choose your program start time which includes starting in term 1 if your school and sweep/coach wishes. This is the most popular option. 

 

The program consists of on water trainings leading to the SISS Dragon Boat Cup on Sunday 24 March 2024 at Lake Rua, Canterbury

Two team options
    o Small team racing (10 paddlers per boat + caller)
    o 11-13 students per team
    o $400 inc GST per team
OR
   o Standard team racing (20 paddlers per boat + caller)
   o 21-25 students per team
   o $800 inc GST per team

Includes the following:
   o Training as arranged with the sweep/coach
   o Use of a boat, paddles and life jackets
   o Training can be in any size boat – dependent on bookings. Note racing will be in standard boats for both 10 and 20 man teams
   o Allocation of a sweep and coach (if one not already aligned with the school)
   o No limit on training. Availability/timings of trainings is determined between the school and the sweep/coach. Aoraki Dragons will facilitate the arrangements.
   o Entry into the SISS Dragon Boat Cup on Sunday 24 March 2024

 

NZDBA Secondary Schools Nationals

3 March 2024

Standard team racing (20 paddlers per boat + caller)

Secondary Schools Nationals is being held alongside the Wellington Dragon Boat Festival Youth Competition. Youth teams from around Aotearoa will race against each other and across their divisions. Medals will be up for grabs with one set being awarded to the national winners of each division and a separate set for the Wellington winners.

The focus of the event is for school aged dragon boaters to have the chance to participate and have fun. Enjoyment is the highest priority.

Junior program


For those students/teams who wish to particiapte in a further events outside the listed two events in the 2023/2024 season above, this can be done as part of a junior team to race at the NZDBA National Championships held 5-6th April 2024.

Students can put their interest forward to either form a composite junior team or to race with their peers from within their school to create a junior team. This would be supported by Aoraki Dragons.
