Tackers 1: Having Fun!
Tackers 1 is the first stage of Australian Sailing’s nationally recognised learn-to-sail program for children aged 7 to 12 years. Designed to be fun, safe and engaging, the course introduces young sailors to the exciting world of dinghy sailing through games-based activities and on-water adventures.
The cost for the initial 5 weeks Tackers 1 is $320. The follow-on course of 5 weeks is an additional $200. The remainder of the season is $100. Therefore, the full season is capped at $620.
The course runs on Saturday mornings, from 8.30 to 11.30.
Children learn the fundamentals of sailing in specially designed OziOpti dinghies, which provide a stable and confidence-building platform for beginner sailors. Participants develop essential skills such as steering, sail control, understanding wind direction, launching and returning to shore, and basic water safety. Qualified Australian Sailing instructors deliver the program in a supportive environment that encourages teamwork, confidence, independence and a lifelong love of being on the water.
By the end of Tackers 1, young sailors will be able to safely sail an OziOpti with guidance, understand basic sailing terminology, and be ready to continue their sailing journey through Tackers 2. The OziOpti is specifically designed for the Tackers program and allows children to sail in pairs or by themselves, while building confidence and developing their skills.
Trainees are encouraged to move to the next stage when they are ready, and progress to sailing O'pen Skiffs or a Manly Junior. Fees for the full season of 20 weeks is capped at $520 regardless of where they end up and which boats they sail.
