Competitions
Physie Competitions

Competition is one part of Physie, but it isn’t the whole reason people join.
Some of our members love the challenge of competition. Some love performing. Some enjoy being part of a team. And some simply love coming to class each week, learning new routines, keeping active and spending time with their friends.
You don’t have to compete to be part of GHPC.
If you do decide to give it a go, there are lots of different opportunities throughout the year, from fun club competitions through to competitions involving Physie members from across Australia.
How do Physie competitions work?
There are two main ways to compete in BJP Physie.
Champion Girl and Champion Lady
This is the individual competition pathway.
Members compete individually in their relevant age or category, working towards their own goals and progressing through the competition pathway where they qualify.
Teams
Teams bring eight members from the same club together to perform as one.
Everyone learns the same routines, but the challenge is bringing everything together so the team is as synchronised as possible.
Timing, positions, technique and working together all matter.
For many members, being part of a team is one of the highlights of the Physie year.
The competition season
There are different competition opportunities throughout the year, and members can choose how involved they would like to be.
Not everyone will take part in every competition, and you don’t need to know the whole competition pathway when you first join.
We’ll let members know what’s coming up and explain what is involved as the year progresses.
Club Competitions
Club competitions are held within GHPC and are a great way to experience performing and competing in a familiar environment.
Annual Choc Competition
Our Choc Competition is a fun introduction to competition for our members.
It is the first competition of the performance season for each year.
It’s a chance to put on competition wear, get ready with your friends, perform your routines and experience some of the excitement of competition with your family and club around you.
For members who are new to competitions, it’s a great way to have a first go in a familiar and friendly environment.
Annual Club Competition
Our annual end of year Club Competition brings everyone together to perform the year’s routines and celebrate what we’ve achieved as a club.
It’s not just for our regular competitors either.
This is a chance for our members and family members to get involved and enjoy the day together.
GHPC also presents Club Competition placement awards and perpetual trophies, including our Junior and Senior Marcher awards at our Club Competition.
Other club awards, including class, encouragement and club person awards, are presented at our Annual Club Presentation Party.

Interclubs
GHPC attends two Interclub Competitions each year. These are the first of the official BjP competitions to be held in the competition season.
Interclub competitions bring together members from a number of Physie clubs.
They provide an opportunity to perform outside your own club and experience competing alongside members from other clubs.
For members who choose to compete, they can be a great opportunity to gain experience before progressing further through the competition season.
These competitions give the opportunity for clubs from all over Australia to come together in a smaller competition of typically 5 to 9 clubs.
These competitions are a practice run for Zone.
Interclub Competitions are usually held between July and August.

Zone
Zone is one of the major competitions of the Physie year.
This is the competition that should you place, you qualify for the National Competition held in Sydney around November.
Our Junior Zone Competition is held in Newcastle and our Ladies Zone competition is held on the Central Coast.
Junior and Ladies Zone Competitions are typically held in September.
Seniors and Ladies over 40 have the option to compete in Sydney (usually in November).
For our members, Zone is about much more than the result.
It’s the routines you’ve been learning all year.
The extra practice.
The nerves before you walk onto the floor.
Your friends cheering for you.
And that feeling when you finish and know you gave it your best.

Team Competitions
Team competitions are about working together.
Eight Girls or Ladies from the same club perform together (in our club owned black leotards), with everyone in the team working on perfecting their timing, inclines and positions so when they are being judged they look as synchronized as possible.
The team members practise together so that their routines come together as one performance.
It’s a lot of work, but it’s also a lot of fun.
There is something pretty special about seeing eight people who have spent months practising together finally step onto the floor and perform as a team.
The judges award placings for the teams and as a team they receive the certificates and ribbons.
Team competitions occur at the Zone competition in Sydney in October for Juniors and Ladies.
Senior teams also compete in Sydney.
Repechage
Repechage provides eligible Junior competitors with another opportunity to progress towards Junior Nationals.
This opportunity is for the Juniors aged 6 - 12 years who make it to their Zone Competition final but do not finish in the top 5 place getting positions (the top 5 competititors who place automatically qualify to compete at the Junior National Competition).
This competition is held in Sydney and is a wonderful opportunity to once again compete with girls from all over Australia.
Reaching this level is a huge achievement, and everyone who makes it this far should feel incredibly proud of what they’ve accomplished.

Junior Nationals
Junior Nationals is the pinnacle indibidual championship event for young competitiors in BJP Physical Culture and is the highest honour Junior Girls can achieve.
The winner of each respective age division at the Junior National Finals receives the highly coveted title ofNational Champion Girl.
The competition is held in Sydney with girls who have placed in their Zone Competition all over Australia as well as those that progress through from the Repechage Competition.
Girls aged 6 years and over who place at our Zone Competition in Newcastle qualify to attend Junior Nationals.
Girls are divided into 2 sections of ages and enter the Quay Centre with full Associate supervision to compete.
Parents collect the girls once the sections have finished.
This can be up to 4 hours long.
The winners of each age group are then selected by the directors as to who will represent each age group on the BJP instructional videos for the following year.
Ladies Nationals
Ladies who place at Zone qualify to attend Ladies Nationals which is held in Sydney.
Like Junior Nationals, Ladies compete for the honour and title of Champion Lady.
The winners are then selected to be a part of the BJP instructional videos that are issued in May of the following year.
For our Ladies, it’s another opportunity to challenge themselves, perform and be part of the wider Physie community.
Seniors Day
Seniors Day is the competition that ages 13 years and up. This competition is held at the Quay Centre typically in November. The finalists of this competition are selected for the Opera House competition.
Seniors National Final
Opera House is the night where the Senior Grand Champion is announced, and for the Seniors who make it there, it’s an incredible experience. Competing on the Opera House floor in front of an audience, taking part in the finale dances and sharing the experience with other Seniors makes it a night they’ll remember for years to come.
But the journey to that stage matters too. The training. The rehearsals. The friendships. The nerves. The excitement. And all the memories made along the way.

What is a Physie competition actually like?
If you’ve never been to one before, it can be hard to know what to expect.
There is getting ready, warming up, finding your section, waiting for your turn and eventually walking onto the competition floor.
For Champion Girl, members perform individually alongside other competitors in their category.
For Teams, eight members perform their routines together.
Competitors are judged according to the current BJP competition rules, and the relevant dress and presentation requirements must be followed.
There can be nerves.
There can be excitement.
There will definitely be lots of cheering.
And then there is that moment when you walk off the floor knowing you did something that might have felt a little scary when you first started.
That’s something worth being proud of.
What do you wear?
Members who compete need the appropriate BJP Performance Wear or leotard for their competition.
BJP has specific rules about what can be worn for competitions, and only competitors who comply with the dress rules may perform.
There are also presentation requirements covering things such as hair, makeup, jewellery and nails.
Junior competitors have additional requirements, so GHPC will make sure members know what they need before their competition.
Competition rules can change, so the current BJP rules always take priority over information published on our website.

Do I have to compete?
No, competitions are completely optional.
You can join GHPC because you love dancing.
You can come for the fitness.
You can enjoy learning new routines.
You can love performing.
You can come for the friendships.
Or you can decide that competition is something you’d really like to try.
There is no single way to experience Physie.
Some members will compete regularly.
Some will try a competition once.
And some will never compete at all.
They’re all part of GHPC.
A place to grow
For some members, their Physie journey might start with a fun club competition.
For others, it might grow into Interclubs, Teams, Zone, Repechage and National Competitions.
And for some of our Seniors, it may eventually lead all the way to the Sydney Opera House.
There is no need to know where your journey will take you when you start.
You can simply start with your first class and see where it goes.
