Open 1

Week 6 - 18th November

GWSC (1) VS Syndal (4)

Some good resilience shown by a few of the Open 1 team in today’s game, having lost to GWSC in Open 2, they bounced back and won 4-1.

A determined Kate persuaded GW to stay put in their dugout, so Syndal had the cooler side of the diamond despite being the away team. Every little helps!

Syndal’s first inning was a 3 up, 3 down, with GW not fairing much better, although they did get their first batter on base but nothing more. Courtney started the second inning with a single to centre but we didn’t get her (or Miki as her DR) home. Jodi had a spectacular at bat with 9 fouls, before being struck out. GW had a 3 up, 3 down second inning.

Top of third and Ashleigh started to follow in Jodi’s footsteps with 4 fouls, before hitting a single to left field. Cate followed her with a walk and we had a runner in a scoring position. Unfortunately, Kate popped up her bunt and GW took a dubious double play. Bottom of third was over in a flash with another 3 up, 3 down before Sarah B came up to the plate for her second at bat. She also sent 7 pitches into foul territory before earning a walk. Unfortunately we couldn’t get her home. Bottom of 4 and Steph took her second catch at centre field, before another very close call (which didn’t go our way) with what looked like Jess beating the batter-runner to first. Luckily, they didn’t move that runner any further.

Bottom of the fifth started with Steph reaching first with a rare error from GW’s third base, followed by Jess hitting into right field, managing to avoid the fielders. GW chased Steph to third, allowing Jess to reach second. Ashleigh hit up the centre with her second at bat and Steph reached home for our first run. Cate then produced a spinning masterpiece, with GW’s battery waiting to see it go foul, whilst she reached first safely. A walk for Kate brought Jess home and then further confusion from GW’s defence brought Ashleigh home (and Cate to third) following Courtney’s infield fly. A single to short stop from Sarah W brought Cate home and Syndal were up 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth. Another 3 up, 3 down from GW and Syndal were up to bat again.

Top of sixth with two out, Ashleigh hit another single to the gap in right field before being replaced by Miki as DR. A hard line drive by Cate ricocheted off the pitcher’s leg into the path of first base for an easy out and side away.

GW had to replace their pitcher as she was up to bat, but her replacement struck out, so a good start to the bottom of the sixth. A little confusion with a short infield hit saw GW reach first safely. An automatic out on a dropped third strike again had some confusion whilst GW stole second. GW then got another batter on base with an infield error and their lead runner to third. A single to left scored the runner and GW ended the inning 4-1 down.

No runs were scored in the seventh for either side despite Syndal receiving two walks and GWSC hitting their best shot with a double to left field.

Final score Syndal 4, GWSC 1. Sarah again won the battle of the pitchers with 10 K2s compared to a combined 7 from the two GW pitchers. She also had another great strike to ball ratio with 72 (strikes and fouls) to 14 balls and a total of 50 pitches fewer than GW.

Open 2

Week 6 - 18th November

Syndal (1) VS Glen Waverley (12)

Glen Waverley got off to a flying start scoring 4 runs in the first innings and unfortunately we couldn’t stop them.

Safe hits for Audrey in the second and fourth innings, Caitlin in the 3rd innings and Kate in the fourth innings unfortunately weren’t enough to combat Glen Waverley’s 13 hits for the game.

We’re hoping our next game will be a better game.

Open 3

Week 6 - 18th November

Syndal (0) VS Monash Magic (7)

At the top of 2, whilst fielding at SS, Kieryn injured her right thumb. With Molly providing transport, and medical help being required, from the top of the 3rd we only had 8 players.

With magnificent sportsmanship MM elected to not count the blank as an out! A single to Molly, a double to Jen and a triple to Paris were our only hits for the game.

After being reduced to 8, from the 3rd inning onwards the defence lifted and we got some great outs. Thanks to Matt for coming to Coach us with Andy.
