Week 5 - 11th November

Syndal (4) VS Ejays (1)

With last week's loss behind us, another win came for Syndal, even better as it was against EJays! There were welcome guest appearances from Bree Dawson, Mel Ross and Rachel Stafford and also thank you to Sal McCarthy joining again due a depleted bench. I'm thinking that the 'Sarah' battery were in need of a short game with Sarah W on fire. 85 pitches with 63 strikes/fouls and only 22 balls. 13 strikeouts, with 6 of them looking, and one single to left field is all I need to say about the first six innings for EJays.

An outsider may have thought the game was going to be about who scored the most strikeouts when Syndal began their batting, but Sarah B soon put pay to that with a large hit to right field which saw her reach 3rd base. Jodi came on as Sarah's temporary runner and was soon crossing the plate as Jess also hit to right field, fortunately with a right field glove muff. Bree reached first on a walk (twice! - was it a miscount of balls?), but no further as Courtney hit a hard line drive back to the pitcher.

Our second and third innings only saw Jodi reach base, reminding all batters that they keep running until called out, as second base couldn't quite control the ball.

Bottom of the fourth and it looked like another quick inning was coming, but fortunately first base couldn't control the throw from shortstop and Sarah W reached first safely. Audrey came on as a replacement runner and made it home from Mel's double to left field. Again nothing to note in the bottom of the fifth but it wasn't long until the bottom of sixth came around.

Bree stepped up for her third at bat and sent it out to centre field. What appeared to be a gentle jog to first base turned into a sprint to third base once Bree realised that centre field hadn't reached her hit. Next stepped up Courtney who sent the ball up the right field line for another triple and a run for Bree. Another hit, this time to left field from Sarah W, saw Courtney come home for Syndal's 4th run. No more runs came home as a fielder's choice double play, put Sarah out at second and Mel out at first.

And finally the top of the seventh with three outs required to win the game. Unfortunately, a home run to right field started the inning, but nothing came of the next three batters and Syndal won the game 4-1.

A good game.
