About

Vogelvlei Yacht Club

Tucked away beneath the majestic Limietberg mountains and hidden from the outside world lies Voëlvlei Dam, home to one of South Africa’s oldest and most cherished sailing clubs - Vogelvlei Yacht Club.
Nestled within the Voëlvlei Nature reserve, the club offers a tranquil setting where nature and sailing come together. The haunting call of the Fish Eagle often echoes across the water, while pelicans and flocks of geese are regular visitors. The dam also supports a rich variety of fish species, including Common Carp, Sharptooth Catfish (Barbel) and Smallmouth Bass.Because the Voëlvlei Dam supplies drinking water to the greater Cape Town area, motorised water sports are not permitted. Sailing reigns supreme here, and enthusiasts of dinghies and catamarans gather regularly to race, train, or simply enjoy gliding across the pristine waters surrounded by breathtaking scenery.

Vogelvlei Yacht Club is dedicated to amateur sailing - where passion, camaraderie, and fun take centre stage. The sailing season is filled with exciting regattas and club events, as well as lively onshore gatherings for our sailors’ supporters and families.
A highlight of the year is the annual Tour de Vlei, our renowned endurance race that draws competitors from across the province. As the only long-haul dinghy event in the Western Cape sailing calendar, it’s a challenge not to be missed!
Introducing newcomers to the sport and sharing our love of sailing with the next generation is at the heart of what we do. We’re proud to involve children from neighbouring communities in these initiatives.
The club welcomes the wider sailing community during regatta weekends, when camping facilities are available for those wishing to stay and soak up the atmosphere.
Visit our events page to plan your next sailing adventure at Vogelvlei - we’d love to see you on the water!
