Hollins Trophy

Hollins Trophy 2027

We are pleased to advise that New South Wales Ice Skating Association (NSWISA) has approved the Sydney Figure Skating Club’s Hollins Trophy 2027 event for Friday 20 to Sunday 22 August 2027.

The 2027 date represents a significant change from the traditional timing of the Hollins Trophy, which has historically been held over the June long weekend. We recognise that this change will have an impact on competitors, coaches, judges, officials, families and supporters who have traditionally planned around the June long weekend.

We therefore wanted to provide early notification to the skating community to assist with forward planning and travel arrangements.
The Sydney Figure Skating Club looks forward to welcoming skaters and officials from around Australia to Sydney for the 2027 Hollins Trophy and appreciates the support of the skating community as we transition to the new August date.

The Hollins Trophy was established by the Sydney Figure Skating Club in 1968 in memory of Mr Ray Hollins, who was the Club Treasurer and the father of two dedicated skaters. Ray Hollins was an executive member of the Bondi Junction Ice Dance and Figure Skating Club, which later became the Sydney Figure Skating Club. The Hollins Trophy was created to nurture developing skaters from across Australia. It is the oldest interstate figure skating competition in Australia.

Growth of the event

By 2009, the competition was celebrating its 41st year and had attracted a record number of entries, demonstrating how it had grown from a club event. It is now one of Australia's major annual championship figure skating competitions attracting international competitiors countries including Hong Kong, New Zealand, India, Indonesia and Singapore, alongside skaters from every Australian state and territory represented at the event.

Associated trophies

Over time the Hollins weekend expanded to include several prestigious events:

  • The Co-operative Cup – the premier interstate men's competition.
  • The Carr's Cup – for pairs, donated by Australian Olympians Danielle McGrath and Stephen Carr.
  • The SFSC Dance Cup – introduced in 2002 for ice dance competitors.

Help Us Complete this History

There are still some interesting gaps in the history that don't appear to be documented online:

  • Who exactly was Ray Hollins? (occupation, skating involvement, how long he served the club)
  • Why was the trophy established specifically in 1968?
  • Who won the very first Hollins Trophy?
  • Original photographs of Ray Hollins.
  • The original trophy presentation.
  • How the event evolved from an interstate competition into today's international event
  • Photos to add to our collection
