First awarded in 1965, inscribed ...

Manly Yacht Club
Junior Challenge Trophy
Presented by
P Leahy Esq.
For
Inter Club Challenge

Notes

Interesting that the model of the MJ inside the cabinet is the original style with the rear bouyancy tank and double brace spinnaker pole system. Gram Walliker has advised that the trophy was originally donated by Paul Leahy at an approx cost of 120 pounds ... at the time, roughly the cost of a complete Manly Junior.

On the back of the Trophy cabinet is the following ...

Deed of Gift

The Manly Yacht Club Junior Challenge Trophy

1. To be raced for by a team of five (5) Manly Junior Type Boats, representing their Club. Their challenge must be lodged in writing by the first day of November with the secretary of the Manly Yacht Club.

2. The Manly Yacht Club is to satisfy itself that the ten (10) competing yachts are of the Manly Junior Type, with no boat having a foreseeable undue advantage.

3. To be organised by the Manly Yacht Club, and raced for on the Manly course.

4. The winning team and club to be decided by the combined aggregate of its five (5) competing yachts. All races to be sailed under the I.Y.R.U. and R.Y.A. rules, additions, and modifications, as laid out in the I.Y.R.U Rule Book. The system of point scoring will be as set out in the I.Y.R.U Rule Book for teams racing.

5. To be raced for when challenged by any one or more Clubs, once annually, between the first day of January and the last day of January of the sailing season in which the challenge is made. If more than one Club should challenge by the said day, 1st November, then these Clubs shall race on course directed by the Manly Yacht Club on a date directed by the Manly Yacht Club which will be no later than the 30th December of the sailing season in which the challenge is to be held, to determine the challenging club and team.

6. If the Club that holds the trophy does not defend it when challenged, the trophy will go by default to the challenging Club. If no challenge is lodged in any one or more years, the last Club to win the trophy shall return the trophy to the Manly Yacht Club for safe keeping, till it is challenged for and won. They may have access to it for short terms for display purposes, while ever they remain the champion club.

7. The Manly Yacht Club must notify by means of the public press and by letter, to all known interested sailing bodies each year, of the existance of this trophy by the 30th day of August each year.
