Digitising History

Published Sun 22 Mar 2026

Thanks to Sailing Australia, there is now an online space to record evidence of all of those Goolwa-to-Milangs, trips to the Snakepit, Narrung and Rat Island races that have been carefully archived in Geoff Byrnes's scrapbooks. Little by little we can add images and anecdotes that may eventually form a book. If you have anything to share, I've put my hand up to be an admin person and will be happy to add to the site.

That image above is from a 1985 trip to Wellington. Fourteen boats tried to start but there was no wind and nobody finished under sail. It was reported that a good time was had by all.

If you don't know me, I'm a third generation vintage boat sailor, journalist and historian, living half time in Goolwa.
