Speed skating is a competitive form of ice skating in which the competitors race each other over set distances on skates. There are two disciplines of speed skating in the Olympic Games, long-track speed skating which is usually referred to as just “speed skating”, while short-track speed skating is known as “short track”.
The ISU governing body of competitive ice sports, refers to long track as “speed skating” and short track as “short track skating”.
Western Australian Ice Racing
Western Australian Ice Racing is the home of speed skating and ice racing in WA — a fast-paced sport built on speed, skill, endurance, and community. Based in Perth, our athletes compete in short track ice racing at local, national, and international levels, representing Western Australia with pride and passion.
Modern ice racing in WA is primarily focused on short track speed skating disciplines. The sport is centred around community participation, athlete development, and national competition pathways. The key organisation supporting the sport is the Western Australian Ice Racing Association, which promotes training, safety, and competition opportunities across the state.
We currently have a single club in the state — the Western Flames Ice Racing Club. Based at Cockburn Ice Arena, the club provides coaching and development programs for skaters of all ages and abilities. The club regularly hosts “Come and Try” sessions to introduce new participants to the sport and has become known for its strong community culture and competitive spirit.
From beginners stepping onto the ice for the first time to experienced racers chasing personal bests and national records, our community welcomes skaters of all ages and abilities. Through coaching, development programs, and competitive racing, we are dedicated to growing the sport and inspiring the next generation of ice athletes in Western Australia.
