Role of the MPIO

The role of the MPIO

In the context of sporting organisations in Australia, a Member Protection Officer (MPIO) is a dedicated individual who serves as a first point of contact for members with inquiries, concerns, or complaints related to member protection, child protection, or other inappropriate behaviour within the sport.

MPIOs provide information about rights, responsibilities, and options available to individuals. They are impartial and act as support, offering guidance and direction, but do not handle complaints or investigate grievances themselves.

Key Roles and Responsibilities of an MPIO:

First Point of Contact:
MPIOs are the initial point of contact for any member with concerns related to member protection.

Information and Guidance:
They provide information about rights, responsibilities, and options available under the sport's member protection policy.

Support and Confidentiality:
MPIOs offer moral support to individuals with concerns and maintain confidentiality.

Triage and Referral:
MPIOs assess the situation, determine the appropriate action, and guide members to the relevant resources for resolution.

Training and Education:
MPIOs are trained to understand member protection policies and procedures and can help educate members about their rights and responsibilities.

MPIOs play a vital role in fostering a safe and inclusive sporting environment by providing a confidential and approachable resource for members who may have concerns or require assistance.
