I have played/tried many different sports in Whyalla however hockey was the one that stuck. Not so much for the game, don’t get me wrong I do enjoy throwing a couple goals in the net every now and then, but the connections and atmosphere. From all the sports I played, the people out at hockey are the reason I kept/keep coming back every year. I have found Whyalla hockey has had a big part in shaping me into the person I am today from building my confidence to broadening my knowledge on how sports operate and function.
My hockey journey started back when juniors were school based and when it came time to choose a club SCHC was my obvious choice. Again, it came down to the people and the environment (welcoming, encourage growth, a team first mentality). The connections I have made throughout my time at SCHC are ones that will last a lifetime, and now watching my nephew (Hudson) rock the green and blue, alongside his father (Kaine) and Grumps (Mark), making connections of his own shows that Steel City isn’t just a club… It is a family!
Volunteering for me started as a junior through canteen duties and umpiring that were not covered. From here, as my abilities increased, my understanding of the club grew, and opportunities become available I jumped on board to help out and volunteer where I could.
Being asked why I volunteer is a super hard question to answer. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing the membership all mingling on the hill near the heaters supporting our team on the park, watching a junior who is struggling to understand/nail a skill finally clicking after some one on one assistance, watching the juniors you coached all season win premierships & coming off the field to celebrate with their proud parents/family, playing alongside the juniors you coached in the senior divisions (& winning awards), creating an environment where other adults who have just moved into town (knowing no one) are welcomed with open arms & supported and so many other valuable examples that would make this spill too long.
In short, I volunteer to help and give back to the club but the main driver behind my volunteering is the people.
