INFORMATION ABOUT THE COURSE;
Speers Point Amateur Sailing Club (SPASC) is an accredited Australian Sailing "Discover Centre" (DSC) with accredited Dinghy Instructors. DSC’s adhere to standards that ensure safety and customer satisfaction, in order to attain and retain this status. With a range of courses and coaching SPASC has a pathway to take to sailors with very little sailing experience to a competitive racing level.
SPASC commenced its Junior Sailing Program in 2021, providing an exciting introduction to the thrill of sailing for junior members. With a range of courses and coaching SPASC has a pathway to take to junior sailors with very little sailing experience to a competitive racing level. We understand that racing is not for everyone so we ensure that we include fun learning games and adventure sails into our program
The Start Sailing 1 & 2 Program is designed for Kids aged 8 to 16 and involves a mixture of classroom learning, sailing exercises, adventure games, occasional racing and cruising to a destination.
NOTE Parents & Guardians - Please ensure you register using your child's revSPORT username and password and not your own, to allocate this Junior Sailing Program correctly.
This course is held on Saturday mornings from 25th October 2025 until 21st March 2026 between 9:00am and Midday with a break between 20th December and 31st January. There is a focus on confidence building and ensuring that game based learning is fully utilised.
Instruction runs between 9am and noon each relevant Saturday.
Our Start Sailing 1 & 2 program uses a class of boat known as Optimists, which are provided by SPASC. All the equipment, including the boats, is provided for this course. There is a discount if students bring their own boat.

Current Junior Sailing Programs involve Optimists, O’pen Skiffs and Laser classes, which are provided by SPASC. Younger kids will always start in an Optimist, as this is the most stable design.
Eligible persons must be either SPASC Family or Junior members, so you need to join your children to the club as membersFIRST before you attempt to register them for this course. If you have multiple children doing courses it will be cheaper to join as a family group, single individual child can be junior member. As mentioned above the registration needs to be in their name as Australian Sailing tracks training by each individual not their parents.
The Junior Sailing Program Fee is payable via this online registration and must be paid during registration. The course registration fees are:
- $270.00 per sailing season per person where a member owns a suitable boat;
- $420.00 per sailing season per person where a member requires a club boat.
Active Kids Vouchers
The NSW Government is helping kids get active with the new Active Kids program and Australian Sailing is an approved provider. From 31 January 2018, parents, guardians and carers can apply for a voucher valued up to $50 per calendar year for each school-enrolled child. The voucher may be used with an approved activity provider for registration, participation and membership costs for sport, fitness and active recreation activities. Apply for your voucher online HERE

PLEASE NOTE - SPASC is a volunteer run organisation with our membership providing their time and effort to keep our club thriving. As a parent(s) of a child undertaking one of our sailing courses it is a condition that you will be occasionally able to assist with running aspects of the club. This may include assisting your child (and others) to manage boats into and out of the water, assist your child to set up and/or pack up and clean boats after use, assist in the canteen or on the bbq, volunteer at fundraising events and offer other general assistance in running the club as you may be able to.

Who should do this course?
This course is designed for participants who wish to begin sailing in a dinghy. All the equipment and gear will be provided by your accredited Discover Sailing Centre.
Course Outcome
You will gain your Start Sailing 1 And Start Sailing 2 completion certificate.
We recognise that some of our course participants are completing the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award and may be using sailing and/or club membership to complete one or more sections of The Award. To learn more, click here.
