Exciting plans are taking shape for Level the Field, a new Avon Valley initiative focused on creating better opportunities for girls aged 13–17 to participate, connect and remain involved in hockey.

Made possible through a $5,000 WA Government Game On, Girls grant, the program is being coordinated by Esther Bliss from Northam Hockey Club, in partnership with Avon Hockey Association, with girls from clubs across the Avon Valley encouraged to be involved.

The first major experience has now been confirmed – an all-inclusive trip to Perth Hockey Stadium on Nov 7th  to watch the Perth Thundersticks, combined with a special all-girls training session involving Hockeyroos players.

Also confirmed is a summer social hockey series for girls, creating a relaxed and supportive environment focused on fun, friendships and developing skills rather than competition.

There is still time to join the program – so jump on board! Whether you've never played before, have stepped away from hockey or already play, now is a great time to get involved. Participants can look forward to giveaways, development opportunities, social activities and a growing network of girls from across the region.

Esther is a passionate advocate for girls remaining involved in sport, and says Level the Field is deliberately about more than hockey.

“We know the teenage years are when many girls leave sport, yet the confidence, friendships, resilience and leadership skills they gain from staying involved can have benefits well beyond the sporting field – including their wellbeing and future careers.”

Importantly, Level the Field is not intended to be a one-off program, but the beginning of a longer-term focus on improving opportunities and conditions for girls in Avon Valley hockey.
