Our Community Impact

Making a Difference Beyond the Diamond

At Mount Gambier Softball League, we're proud to support local charities and organisations that make a difference in our community.

Through our annual All Star Fully Loaded Softball Charity Match, our clubs come together to nominate and support local causes, raising funds and awareness for organisations doing important work across Mount Gambier and the Limestone Coast.

Since 2022, this event has provided an opportunity for our softball community to give back, with each year bringing a new opportunity to make a positive impact.

2026: In-Home Hospice Care

This year, the Mount Gambier Softball League is supporting In-Home Hospice Care, a community-based, not-for-profit organisation that provides compassionate support to people living with life-limiting illnesses, as well as their carers and families.

Its trained volunteers work alongside health professionals to provide practical and emotional support in the home, helping individuals and families navigate an incredibly difficult time. These services are provided free of charge to members of our community.

The league is proud to continue its tradition of supporting organisations that make a meaningful difference to local lives.

The 2026 All Star Fully Loaded Softball Charity Match will take place on Friday, 27 November, with formalities commencing at 5.30 pm.

We look forward to bringing our softball community together once again to celebrate our players, support a worthy local cause and make a positive difference in our community.

2025: Royal Flying Doctor Service

In 2025, the league selected the Mount Gambier Support Group of the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) as its charity of choice.

Known throughout Australia, the RFDS provides essential medical services nationwide, while the Mount Gambier Support Group supports the service’s operations and fundraising efforts locally.

The RFDS operates around the clock, providing patient transfers, emergency evacuations and healthcare to people in regional and remote communities. In South Australia, it averages 20 interhospital transfers each day, helping patients access the care they need.

The league was proud to raise $3,250 for the Mount Gambier Support Group, supporting this much-loved Australian service.

2024: Mount Gambier Breast Cancer Awareness Group

In 2024, the league supported the Mount Gambier Breast Cancer Awareness Group, established in 2000 by Mount Gambier’s Leanne Kosch and Tantanoola’s Kay Holloway.

The group’s committee continued the work of those who had established the organisation, including members who had sadly since lost their own battles with breast cancer, by holding an annual pink fundraising event in October to raise awareness and support its ongoing work.

Since 2019, the group has invested more than $70,000 in establishing a lymphoedema service in Mount Gambier. This included training a practitioner and providing two state-of-the-art diagnostic machines and a laser scanner for use in public and private practice.

The service enabled early intervention for patients at high risk of developing lymphoedema, allowing them to access local treatment without needing to travel to Adelaide.

The league raised $2,816 for the group in 2024, supporting its continued work with people affected by breast cancer.

2023: Sunset Community Kitchen

In 2023, the league supported Sunset Community Kitchen, an organisation that had been operating since 2009 and provided hot meals to people in need on Monday and Wednesday evenings.

With more than 100 volunteers involved in preparing and serving up to 70 hot meals twice a week, the organisation relied on community support to continue assisting people experiencing socioeconomic disadvantage.

The league was proud to raise $2,128 for Sunset Community Kitchen, helping support its valuable work in the local community.

2022: Mount Gambier Cancer Support Group

In the inaugural year, the league met with Lorraine Musgrove, then chairperson of the Mount Gambier Cancer Support Group. Established in 1980, the group supported individuals and families affected by cancer.

Its assistance included help with medical expenses, travel and accommodation costs for treatment, food vouchers, emotional support, support groups and information for cancer patients and their families.

The league chose the Mount Gambier Cancer Support Group as its first charity because it wanted to support a cause that directly benefited local people and helped make their cancer journey a little easier.

Fundraising activities included a raffle featuring prizes donated by 12 local businesses, lucky squares and a barbecue run by one of the league’s clubs.

For the first match, each club selected four to five players to participate, with 22 players divided into two mixed teams. The All Star’s format began with the bases loaded, featured shortened fences and showcased the players’ talent through a spectacular display of home runs, base stealing and impressive defensive plays. As in any softball game, the team with the most runs at the end of the match won.

The event generated excitement throughout the league, promoting an important local support organisation while showcasing our players' talent.

The inaugural All Star Fully Loaded Softball Charity Match raised $3,118 for the Mount Gambier Cancer Support Group.

Following this success, the league continued to dedicate time each season to raising funds for local charities that benefited the wider community.
