Welcome to Jindabyne Snow Dragons 

Jindabyne Snow Dragon Club is a dragon boat sports club who welcome anyone aged 10 years and over to come and try this awesome sport! We paddle on Lake Jindabyne, meeting at the Jindabyne Sailing Club off Kosciuszko Road. Racing in regattas allows us to form new friendships and have fun with other clubs and we get to paddle on other beautiful lakes and rivers both in NSW and interstate. Our club includes paddlers of all ages and abilities.  Everyone in our community is welcome to join us and try out Dragon Boat paddling.

Dragon Boat History

The Chinese dragon, also known as the “loong”, is a legendary creature in Chinese mythology.  Chinese dragons traditionally symbolize potent powers, particularly control over water, rainfall, typhoons, and floods. The dragon is also a symbol of power, strength, and good luck.  

Dragon boat racing began about 2000 years ago in Southern China.  It was initially a folk ritual designed to appease the rain gods, encourage rainfall and celebrate the summer rice planting.

In the 1970s, dragon boating gradually evolved from being a folk custom and to become a modern, fully-fledged water sport.  Over time, it has been modified as a sport and dragon boat racing races are now conducted in more than 30 nations worldwide.

Why is dragon boat paddling so popular?

A full dragon boat team consists of 20 paddlers in one boat, a sweep who steers the boat and a drummer who sits on the front. Dragon boating will increase core strength, build endurance and improve coordination. Your upper body, legs and stomach will all receive a work out whilst increasing cardiovascular fitness and improving bone density. Paddlers do it for the challenge, enjoyment and social interaction.  It is also an awesome team sport which includes men, women and children aged 10 years and over.
