Ishinryu: Dojo Etiquette

Discipline in the dojo is of paramount importance. Dojo etiquette is a code of conduct essential to the proper practice of the Japanese Martial Arts, without it practice becomes meaningless. Self-discipline, mutual trust and respect for one's opponents are essential to safe practice. Please carefully observe the following:

1. Students must bow (rei) on entering and leaving the Dojo, and to black belts when they enter or leave the dojo.

2. Address instructors as “Sensei” or “Sempai” whilst in the dojo.

3. Any student arriving late must take up a kneeling position at the edge of the tatami and await permission from the instructor before joining the class. On receiving permission, they bow and then join the class.

4. “Oos” is a sign of respect and is used generally in karate, especially in the following situations:

· Upon receiving a command or advice from the instructor

· When bowing at the start and finish of the class.

· When bowing to your partner during kumite or drills.

· In any other appropriate situation (for example, during competitions).

5. No one is to leave the class without obtaining permission from Sensei.

6. During pair or group training, lower graded students move to the higher grades.

7. Water bottles are permitted on the side of the dojo floor. Students can access them only during a break in the class.

8. Finger and toe nails must be kept short and clean, and all jewellery removed to prevent injury to oneself or others.

9. Students are to wear a white karate gi with Ishinryu badges. Gis are to be kept clean and in good condition.

10. No shoes are permitted on the Dojo floor without approval from Sensei.

11. Students must behave themselves at all times both inside and outside the Dojo. Boisterous behaviour and foul language are not allowed in the Dojo. A violent, argumentative or aggressive manner will result in dismissal.

12. Alcohol (or any illicit drug) consumption before class is strictly forbidden.

13. Criticism of other Karateka is not permitted, whilst praise is encouraged.

14. No form of karate is to be taught by a student to a non-member.

15. Sparring is permitted only under the supervision of an instructor.

16. Students must not use their skills in any offensive way outside the dojo.

17. All students must have a current Ishinryu Karate licence and AKF insurance.

18. All techniques performed in the dojo must be performed with absolute control, with respect for the opponent.
