Victorian State Championship Wrap  -  Altona 2025

Above top to bottom:  Sam Moore handling the windy conditions well on the Sunday;   Monica Jones, 2025 Ladies Champion;   Great to see some juniors back in the class, from left to right, 2025 Vic Junior Champion Theresa Morton, Ingrid Heins, James Moore, Sam Moore.

It was really pleasing to see numbers up from previous years with 42 sailors.   We had a variety of wind strengths over the weekend, the top sailors as always showing consistency in all conditions.
Day 1 on the Saturday saw 2 races sailed in a moderate 12 - 16 knot southerly breeze.  Sailors took a little time to get used to the bigger fleet, a few boats were OCS in both races, most dramatically Ross Kenneally who openly flouted the U flag in race 2, though to be fair a lot of us, Ross included, didn't notice the U flag was flying!  Race 1 honours went to 2023 champ Matt Kiely, with Shaun Ritson in second.  Race 2 was won by the talented Mark Bulka, the first of a 5 race winning streak.
The wind shifted to an offshore Northerly on Sunday, giving us flatter water and a shifting breeze of about 16 - 20 knots across all morning and afternoon races.  Mark won all 4 races but was challenged by a few different sailors, in the first race Shaun, the second Matt, the third Toby Leppin and the fourth Paul Farrell.  The stronger winds and flat water made for enjoyable sailing for most, though by the end of the afternoon the wind was taking its toll, with breakages and tiring sailors.
On Monday morning the wind was a lot lighter, though still from the North.  Only one race was sailed before the wind died out, taken out by Jonathan Pulham, showing us why he's still the one to beat in the light stuff.  A couple of standout results from Geoff Rippingale who finished second, and Theresa Morton cementing the Junior title in style finishing the race in 21st in a comparatively underpowered 6.6.
Congratulations to Mark Bulka on a comprehensive victory, it was a joy to watch his race craft and speed in action.  Our Junior Champ and 6.6 division winner as mentioned was Theresa Morton.  Four juniors competed this series, alongside Theresa were Sam and James Moore from Ryhll and Ingrid Heins from Mordialloc.  Fantastic effort from all 4 in particular to sail every race in Sunday's strong winds.  Each of our juniors was given a cash prize, thanks to Ross Neville for donating his lucky draw winnings.  Monica Jones won the Ladies division, Ryan Blackstock won the Vintage boat division, Craig Sheppard finished strongly to win the Handicap division, and in the age divisions Seniors was won by Jonathan Pulham, Masters by Peter Kemp, Grand Masters by Toby Leppin and Great Grand Masters by Leon Raymond.  Well done to all.
Some great drone footage was taken during the event, this and other short videos can be found on the Impulse National Facebook page:  Many thanks to Altona for running a successful series, we are all looking forward to the Nationals at Altona in December!.
