Umpiring

- Umpiring in 2026 -

This season, our Umpire Coordinator Tash McCarthy will be working closely with a panel of experienced umpires to help develop and improve the standard of umpiring across our Association.

We’re excited to continue our new Umpire Development Program for 2026. This initiative aims to support umpires at all levels through mentorship, education, and stronger communication. Each Senior team will provide one individual, and each U17's team two players to enter the Development Program. We are lucky to have an enthusiastic, supportive group of mentors who will be on duty each week to facilitate this program.

Our umpiring panel—alongside team captains and other willing umpires—will continue to use the EHA Umpires WhatsApp Group as the central platform for updates, support, and coordination. Every Senior team must ensure at least one representative is active in the group.

If your team is unable to fulfill an umpiring duty during the season, you are encouraged to post a request for assistance in the WhatsApp group. Please remember that while we hope others can help, everyone has the right to decline.

Payment for Umpiring:
Umpires who take on duties for another team will be paid $50 per game (capped).

Umpire Duty Notification:
If your team cannot cover an umpiring duty, please notify the Umpire Coordinator by 6:00 PM on the Thursday before the game. This ensures we remain compliant with the Association’s by-law regarding match forfeits and notification timeframes.

Senior teams are to continue to send in the name of the person covering their U17's umpiring duty each week, for allocation. Please refer to the clubhouse whiteboard each Saturday morning for ground and co-umpire listings.

Mentorship Opportunities:
Several experienced umpires have offered to mentor learner umpires, in addition to the Umpire Development Program (at U17's/Senior level). If your team has members who are interested in learning or would benefit from a mentor, please reach out to the Umpire or Grade Coordinators.

Helpful Resources:
We strongly encourage all umpires to download the official FIH 'Rules of Hockey' app. It includes clear rule explanations and interactive quizzes to help you test your knowledge.

For those interested in becoming an umpire, please speak with Tash or any member of the Committee. You can also access free downloadable resources through Hockey WA’s website here:
