About Us
WestSide Roller Derby is a volunteer-run, not-for-profit roller derby league based in Footscray and Braybrook. We are a community-focused club committed to making roller derby accessible, inclusive, and empowering for people 16+ of all genders, backgrounds, and abilities.
We are proud to be an open gender roller derby club in Melbourne’s west to provide a safe, supportive environment where everyone, from first-time skaters to experienced competitors, can learn, grow, and belong.

What is Roller Derby?
At the competitive level, roller derby is a fast-paced, full-contact team sport played on roller skates. Two teams compete on an oval track, with one skater from each team (the jammer) scoring points by skating past members of the opposing team, while blockers work together using strategy, strength, and teamwork to stop them.
While it’s known for being exciting and physically demanding, roller derby is also highly tactical and adaptable. Skaters bring different strengths to the track, speed, agility, power, communication, and game awareness, making it a sport where many body types, skill sets, and personalities can thrive.
At the recreational and developing skater level, roller derby is played as at non or modified contact level, with skaters working through all the skills necessary to be safe and confident on roller skates.

Why Roller Derby Is Inclusive?
- Roller derby was built from the ground up as an inclusive, skater-led sport, and at WestSide we proudly continue that tradition by fostering a culture where everyone is respected, supported, and able to belong.
- Many of our members had not found a sport that felt like “home” before discovering roller derby, and we are especially proud to be welcoming to people of all genders, including open-gender play, with a strong representation from the LGBTQI+ community. We offer multiple pathways to suit different skill levels and goals, welcome complete beginners with no prior skating experience, and provide meaningful opportunities, roles both on and off skates, including referees, non-skating officials, and volunteers.
- With a strong emphasis on consent, safety, and mutual respect, our focus extends beyond competition to participation, confidence-building, and genuine community connection.
