Community sport encouraged to have fun this sUPport Day
Published Sun 16 Aug 2026
Sporting clubs across Australia are being encouraged to use the connection already within their teams and communities to support people who may be doing it tough.
Held on Sunday 13 September 2026, sUPport Day invites clubs & associations of all sports and sizes to bring people together, have some fun and create an opportunity to check in with teammates, volunteers, coaches and supporters.
Clubs can take part in whatever way works for them, from holding a barbecue or morning tea to adding a social activity to an existing training session, competition or club event.
The idea is deliberately simple: have fun, check in.
Kayt Spano, sUPport Day Founder said sporting clubs were often places where people felt connected, even if they did not always talk openly about what was happening in their lives.
“Sport gives people a place to belong. Teammates train together, compete together and show up for one another week after week, but it can still be difficult for someone to say when they are struggling,” Kayt said.
“sUPport Day gives clubs a reason to pause, spend time together and start the kinds of conversations that do not always happen on the sidelines or after training.
“We are not asking volunteers to become mental health professionals or clubs to deliver complicated programs. We are simply encouraging people to notice each other, ask how someone is going and take the time to listen.”
sUPport Day was established following the deaths of four young people in Kayt’s community.
The initiative recognises the important role community sporting clubs can play in reducing isolation and helping people feel seen, valued and supported.
Kayt said the day was designed to be accessible to every club, regardless of its size, resources or location.
“Clubs do not need to organise a major event. It might be sharing a meal after a game, running a fun training session or simply making time for people to talk.
“What matters is creating a relaxed opportunity to connect and making sure no one in the team is doing it tougher than they let on.”
Clubs can register their sUPport Day activity and access information and resources at supportday.com.au. seeing as this isn’t ready yet, shall we just have the email address?
