Dragon Boat Racing is based on an ancient folk ritual of contending villages, which began in Southern China more than 2,000 years ago.
While competitions have taken place annually for more than 20 centuries as part of religious ceremonies and folk customs, dragon boat racing has been transformed into a competitive and social sport. In competitive racing, the brightly decorated 12 metre long boats with colourful Chinese dragon heads and tails, and filled with twenty energetic paddlers, as well as a drummer and a sweep (a steerer). Racing occurs over lengths of 250 to 2,000 metres and maintains the ancient traditions of competition, drumming and dragon heads, as well as celebrating river usage.
