Flippa Ball
BACK @ SHAC
Flippa Ball™ aims to introduce juniors to a modified version of water polo by providing an enjoyable, interactive game that will encourage, them to pursue the sport and go on to play water polo.
Australian Water Polo Inc. and its state and territory affiliates are committed to developing Flippa Ball™ for young people and have developed a comprehensive Flippa Ball™ Manual.
This manual may be used by physical educators, teachers, parents, pool managers’ staff and state development officers in their junior programs.
Flippa Ball™ has taken off across Australia and has strong numbers in the Perth metropolitan area, Geraldton and Port Hedland.
The game has been designed for children aged between 5 and 12. It is a fun, simple game that can be played by all children regardless of their height, gender and, most importantly of all, their swimming ability.
Being a modified version of water polo, Flippa Ball™ is played in the shallow end of the pool so that the children may use the bottom of the pool to rest and for added security and safety.
The basic rules of the game are quite simple;
• Players may catch the ball with either one or two hands, but can only pass or shoot with one hand.
• While holding the ball, players are not permitted to walk along the bottom of the pool or take the ball under water. They must either swim with the ball or pass the ball to a team mate.
• When a player has hold of the ball they cannot be tackled. Other players must allow the player in possession of the ball to be able to pass or shoot the ball.
Through participation in Flippa Ball™, children will learn and develop skills that are needed for water polo with greater ease. To download a overview of the rules for your child you can click here
We encourage all kids & parents to try and stick around to watch a Senior Water Polo game every now and then, its great fun & a great motivator for the kids to aspire to aswell.
The senior players love a crowd when playing as well so make sure you give them a cheer.
What assistance is needed for a successful experience for you child?
Parent Assistance
We are a sporting body and key to the success of the sport and this program is parent involvement and assistance to deliver the experience each week.
To ensure that the workload is shared each week between all parents, your child's team will be nominated for duty.
You will receive an email in the week prior to your childs teams duty to notify you that it is coming up. With the duty roster this means only once every 4 weeks you will be doing the below work.
If you are happy to help out each week you are more than welcome & it would be greatly appreciated.
When your childs team is on duty this means you will need to be involved with the BBQ, Setting up & Packing up of Flippaball equipment,
Keeping time for the game & notifying the umpire of the start & finish of games as well assisting the Senior Polo Member with managing the players on field.
We will have Polo members there assisting so if you have any questions and not sure please dont hesitate to ask, how can you help or feel free to contact us prior.
A roster will be sent out through email. You will be advised of your duty night via email the week prior.
Remember many hands make light work!
