Presidents Address - February 2024

Published Thu 08 Feb 2024

To Maccabi Basketball friends and family,

Firstly, as the conflict in Israel remains ongoing, I'd like to extend my warm wishes to the entirety of our community, particularly those with friends and family in the region. Our thoughts and hearts are with you and wish ongoing strength and comfort.

In such a difficult time for our community, I'm particularly proud of the way our players and members have conducted themselves both on and off the court. Basketball has the ability to bring people together, and it's been great to be able to watch our teams represent our club strongly across all grades and competitions.

Entering a new year has encouraged me to reflect on my past 4 years as president of the club and what we've been able to achieve as a community, with the help of our amazing committee. At the start of 2020, we commenced the year with just under 200 members, made up of 15 junior teams and 5 senior teams, including just one girls team. I'm proud to announce that entering 2024, we have 31 junior teams, including 8 girls’ teams, in addition to 8 senior teams. This is a credit to the amazing work of our committee, coaches and team managers, who have all been instrumental in ensuring an enjoyable experience for all Maccabi Basketball members on and off the court.

Over the break the club put on two holiday camps at Moriah College, working with kids from ages 6 to 14 on all thing’s basketball. With over 200 children attending across the collective six days, our holiday camps continue to be a great success. I'd like to send a shoutout to our Head Coach Sylvester Wilson for his professionalism and hard work in making these camps run so smoothly, as they continue to be a great offering for our members.

It's also great to be able to once again be running our Social Competition for seniors, which are occurring Thursday evenings at Waverley College. Run in a modified 4v4 format on smaller courts, the social competition is a perfect opportunity to engage a wide range of players across our community at one place and time. Suitable for both players who are on the court daily to those seeking a good workout, it's a great initiative to engage more members of our community. For any enquiries regarding current or future competitions reach out to Matt Bozic the competition manager at

Finally, I am excited to announce the return of our 5 major sponsors for 2024 and 2025, who have already been a major support to our club over the past 2 years. We are extremely grateful for their backing in the past and into the future, which allows us to continue to provide our members with a high quality service on and off the court. I'd love for our community, in return, to support these brands when possible, all of which I've included below.
