Our History

Established in 1947, Kiama Hockey Club has a proud and long-standing place within the community.

Please see below for some information (written in the late 1990s) about our early days:

Kiama Hockey Club

Fifty years ago a group of young Kiama Ladies decided to band together to form a hockey club. Kiama Hockey Club was formed on Thursday, 8th May 1947. Two teams were entered in the newly formed Shoalhaven (South Coast since 1973) Womens' Hockey Association competition. Friendly games were also played against the local football club and Locking Hill Quarry men.  Membership of the club was fixed at 2/6 (25c) compared with the current fee of $60 for seniors.

The Club originally played at "Fernlea" and then on the Football field and after approaching the Council was granted approval to use the area at Chapman's Point, which became known as 'The Hockey Field'. As it was overgrown, the members (including Loma Martin and Merle King) found it necessary to set fire to the blackberry bushes and lantana and eventually the Fire Brigade had to be called in. When the Club outgrew this field, and because a cricket pitch had been made in the middle of the field, which was covered with often unsuitable material after the cricket (Soccer also moved in and as well the campers used the area up until Easter) the Council eventually made the newly acquired area at Bonaire Street available for two fields. Club Members put in a lot of hard work to clear the stones and fill in the uneven ground and dig drains on the eastern side, and shift the water hoses around during the summer to get the grass to grow.  One afternoon, just as a couple of people were knocking off, a Police Car came roaring across the middle of the oval, as they had received a complaint that someone was digging up the fields!! Unfortunately, one field was disrupted (and still and not been corrected) when the sewerage pipes were laid. The new fields were first used in 1979, and in 1980 the Club fielded eight teams in Divisions One, Two, Three (2), Four and Five (3). Club uniform was white box pleat tunics, blouse and socks. Skirts later replaced the tunic in styles varying from wrap-around to box pleats to knife pleats, and the current uniform is white and red top, white and red skirt with two white stripes, socks.
