Hervey Bay Dragons was established on 29 April 2009. Ed Gibson gathered a small group to form the inaugural committee after arranging to purchase a Dragon Boat. A bank of members and many helpers from the Hervey Bay Boat Club organised a very successful “Come and try day” under the guidance of Brisbane River Dragon Boat Club.
Once the membership increased and training was in earnest, Ed then liaised with surrounding teams from Cooloola, 1770 and Bundaberg to join with us in creating the Wide Bay Series of Regattas.
The first regatta was held in 2010 and the Hervey Bay Dragon Boat Club went on to win the first Series title. This was held at the Hervey Bay Surf Life Saving Club to which it is held to this day.
