Juniors & Qld Sonic Dragons

Dragon Boat Club

Townsville, North Queensland

KEY INFORMATION - Juniors - SONICS:

  • Juniors must turn 8 years of age in the year of competition
  • Once Juniors turn 18, they will transition to the next competition level
  • Juniors do not have to be member of a 'parent' club.  Juniors may register as Queensland Sonic Dragons directly.  The kids are then able to choose a parent or host club as a 'Secondary' club.  This means that Juniors are first and foremost, Queensland Sonic Dragons until they turn 18.
  • Queensland Sonic Dragons based in North Queensland will train together on the fourth weekend of every month, commencing in July 2020
  • Blaze Dragons are the host club for the development and coaching of Qld Sonic Dragons members in the Northern Queensland Region.
  • All Juniors will always have a seat on the boat.
  • Membership for Juniors registered with Blaze Dragons is $50 per annum.  This covers insurance, the use of the boat, Personal Flotation Device (PFD) and a paddle.  Financial members have full access to club facilities and equipment.
  • Our Juniors will be supported through fundraising activities and grants to travel to:-
    • Queensland State Championships - Kawana - Sunshine Coast each March
    • Australian Dragon Boat Championships - Rotational each year - 2021 will be hosted by Western Australia
    • International - IDBF-sanctioned events (Worlds) - Rotaional - 2019 was Thailand.  2020 (France) was cancelled due to COVID.  Worlds are in Hong Kong in 2021 and Club Crew Worlds in USA in 2022.   Juniors who join our club in 2020 will be 100% considered for all events at Local, State, National and International Level where Sonics qualify.

Qld Sonic Dragons has been formed to cater for Juniors aged 8 to 18 years of age to train and compete in the sport of Dragon Boating.

Our members come from as far north as Townsville and spread down to Tweed. In our club we promote: team work, good health, leadership skills, a positive social environment, sports development & fun. The DBQ Junior Dragon Boat Club is a development club, focused on the development of Juniors throughout Queensland. The Club trains once a month on a Saturday or Sunday at various locations from Gold Coast to Sunshine Coast and now including North Queensland.

Local regattas are also utilised as training for the Juniors. We offer a lot of support for families and try to keep costs to a minimum. We wiill also have a race uniform for the Junior paddlers to use at Regattas on a loan basis. Our training programme is youth focused with a lot of emphasis on team building, confidence building, & fun. The Club invites you to come along to one of our training sessions to give Dragon Boating a try.

In November 2019, the North Queensland 'arm' of Qld Sonic Dragons was established.  By February 2020, the Junior Membership for Sonics had grown from one to eight.  After a break of a few months due to COVID, the Sonics Host Club, Blaze Dragons achieved the first Club COVID-19 Safe Plan Approval in Queensland for the safe return to paddling (YIPPEEEEE!).   The club will be once again busy recruiting Junior Dragon Boat Paddlers to join the ever-growing Qld Sonic Dragons!!!!

Did you know that your Junior paddler immediately becomes a member of the Queensland Junior Representative Club (Sonics) once registered?  Absolutely CORRECT!!!  What we LOVE about our sport is opportunities for our Juniors to represent AUSTRALIA overseas is highly attainable!!!!
