Whether you’re just starting out or already playing at a high standard, the Adelaide University Tennis Club (AUTC) is your home for tennis at Adelaide University.
We’re more than a sports club — we’re a strong, inclusive community for students, staff, and alumni who enjoy tennis. From social hitting to competitive matchplay, AUTC supports a wide range of playing styles and standards, with opportunities to develop your game, meet people, and represent the club in competition.
The Adelaide University Tennis Club has a long-standing connection to Adelaide University Sport, with historic roots dating back to 1885 for the men’s team and 1912 for the women’s. The men’s and women’s clubs merged in 1970, establishing a unified tradition of tennis excellence, participation, and community.
More recently, the club has expanded through the merger of university tennis communities, strengthening our membership base and improving access to facilities. Today, we are proud to offer both social and competitive tennis across lawn and hard courts, combining heritage with a modern, welcoming club culture.
AUTC is open to players of all standards — from first-time players to experienced competitors.
Social tennis is suitable for all levels, with sessions structured to ensure everyone can participate.
Competition tennis is welcoming and supportive, but matchplay can be demanding across grades. Prospective competition players should ideally be able to serve and rally consistently.
New to AUTC? Prospective members are welcome to attend one free trial session at the start of each semester. This allows you to experience the club environment, understand how sessions operate, and meet other members before committing to membership.
If you do not have a racket, you can still participate. Rackets are available to hire for $5 per person (subject to availability).
AUTC runs structured social tennis sessions designed to support a wide range of standards — from beginners through to advanced social players. Sessions typically include a combination of warm-up hitting, organised rotations, and point play, ensuring consistent court time and opportunities to play with different partners.
To align with university timetables, session days and times are confirmed each semester based on the majority availability of students. This approach helps maximise participation and keeps sessions accessible throughout the academic year.
During summer, the club operates across both lawn and hard courts, including venues such as Park 10 (lawn) and Adelaide High School hard courts (hard).
Two social sessions per week (2 hours each)
This dual-surface structure provides variety in playing conditions and helps members develop a more adaptable all-round game.
During winter, the club operates primarily on hard courts, including Adelaide High School hard courts, ensuring consistent tennis through the cooler months.
One social session per week (3 hours)
The longer session format supports structured play, point-based formats, and flexibility across different playing levels.
The club also has access to courts at the Mawson Lakes campus, supporting broader participation and additional playing opportunities as scheduling allows.
AUTC aims to support member development through coaching opportunities across the year. Coaching is designed to assist players at different stages — from learning the fundamentals to improving matchplay patterns, consistency, and tactical decision-making.
Coaching sessions may include:
technical development
footwork and movement patterns
matchplay structure and point construction
consistency and decision-making under pressure
Coaching availability, formats (individual or group), and scheduling are confirmed based on coach and court availability, as well as student demand during the semester
AUTC provides multiple pathways for members who want to represent the club through structured competition, team environments, and university-level events.
Saturday morning men’s competition is an established pathway for regular matchplay and team participation.
The club is actively working to increase women’s participation, particularly for Saturday afternoon competition and Thursday midweek competition.
For eligible players, the club also supports representative opportunities including:
Uni Nationals (Australian University Nationals)
UTL (University Tennis League)
Selection and participation for representative events may be subject to eligibility requirements, team selection processes, and event scheduling.
Members interested in competition are encouraged to attend social sessions regularly to build consistency and confidence, and to connect with the club community.
Consistency matters — and we recognise member contribution and engagement. Attendance is tracked, and dedicated members may be recognised each semester through:
prizes
shout-outs
invitations to club tournaments and special events (where available)
Our semester-based membership system is designed to align with your academic schedule and level of commitment. Choose the tier that suits you best:
