What Is FSAE?
What is Formula SAE?
Formula SAE (F-SAE) is an international, student-led engineering competition that challenges university teams to design, build, and compete with a small, high-performance open-wheel race car. Beyond engineering, the competition develops critical skills in project management, research, teamwork, and professional communication.
Students gain real-world experience by working in a multidisciplinary team environment that closely mirrors industry practice.
The Competition
Each team operates as a hypothetical start-up company tasked with designing a marketable and profitable formula-style race car. The project runs over approximately twelve months and places strong emphasis on teamwork, planning, and execution.
The season culminates in a three-day competition event, where teams are assessed through a combination of static and dynamic events. These assessments evaluate not only vehicle performance, but also engineering justification, cost awareness, and business viability.
Teams from across Australasia—and occasionally international entrants—compete, making the event a highly competitive and collaborative experience.
