About Arrows Athletics Hockey Club

Arrows Athletics Hockey Club is a proud, family-friendly field hockey club in Bundaberg, competing in the Bundaberg Hockey Association. We welcome juniors and seniors of all ages and experience levels from Bundaberg, Bargara and surrounding areas.

We are community-focused, volunteer-run, and built on the kind of club culture where people feel included, supported, and part of something bigger than just sport.

Our story in Bundaberg hockey

Arrows Athletics has real local roots. The club you see today was built from two proud Bundaberg clubs that helped shape hockey in the region for decades before joining forces.

Arrows Hockey Club was formed in 1947 and affiliated with the Bundaberg Hockey Association. From the early days, Arrows was known for commitment, strong club spirit, and a focus on building juniors as well as seniors.

Athletics Hockey Club was formed in early 1959 as an all-female club and quickly developed a reputation for strong leadership, competitive standards, and developing juniors. Over time, Athletics grew and evolved into a broader club, while holding onto the same values of inclusion, friendship, and pride in performance.

In 1995, the two clubs officially amalgamated, combining the best of both histories into one club. That mix of community spirit, development pathways, and competitive edge is still what Arrows Athletics is known for today.

The Fly Cup and why it matters

The Fly Cup is one of the club’s most meaningful traditions, and it’s more than just a match. It began as a fixture played during Premier League competition, originally as the first round clash between Arrows Athletics and Brothers, before evolving into an annual social event alternating between Maryborough and Bundaberg.

Fly Cup day is about connection. It brings players, families, and supporters together, usually finishing with a barbeque and a chance to share stories. Over the years, it has also grown to include a women’s match, keeping the day inclusive and representative of the hockey community.

A tradition many people recognise is the song American Pie. It was a Brothers anthem that Arrows Athletics adopted, and it was played at Leon’s funeral. Since then, it has been played at every Fly Cup game, with everyone there singing along. It’s one of those moments that reminds you why clubs matter.

The Fly Cup has been held every year since 1998, with exceptions for the 2013 floods and 2020 due to COVID-19. Wins and losses come and go, but the meaning of the day stays the same.

What we’re about today

Arrows Athletics is still built on community. People don’t just turn up, play, and leave. Kids grow up through the club together, friendships form across teams, and families get involved in a way that makes the season feel like a genuine community.

Our milestones

1947: Arrows Hockey Club formed in Bundaberg.
1959: Athletics Hockey Club formed, building a proud legacy in women’s hockey and junior development.
1995: Arrows and Athletics officially united, becoming Arrows Athletics Hockey Club.
1998: The Fly Cup began and remains a special annual tradition within our hockey community.
2025: We successfully secured grant funding and partnered with amazing local businesses to build a new grandstand with a roof, improving accessibility and providing shade and sun protection for our players, families, and supporters.
2025: Our members then delivered the kind of effort that makes you proud to be part of this club. With late nights during the week leading into finals, the grandstand was installed in time so our teams could run out to a stand full of their supporters.

2026 season overview

For the 2026 hockey season, we are actively seeking new and returning players across all age groups and grades. This includes junior hockey from as young as 4 years old through to senior hockey, social players and experienced competitors. We are continuing to grow our senior women’s program, with opportunities available in Division 1 women’s hockey, as well as development and social grades.

Our outdoor hockey season runs from early March through to early to mid September, with training commencing in late January to early February.

Training for the 2026 season will be held on Tuesday afternoons and evenings, with matches played on Friday nights and Saturdays..

Fundraising support and fee credits

Arrows is a volunteer-run organisation and fundraising plays a big part in keeping hockey affordable and the club strong.

Members who assist with club fundraising activities, including Friday night raffles, can earn credits off their playing fees. It’s a practical way to reward those who chip in, while supporting the long-term sustainability of hockey in Bundaberg.
