About

Beginnings

Wollongong University College Men's Hockey Club formed in 1962, as one of the three foundation UOW sports clubs, originally consisting of one team, that expanded and grew over time with the university.

The foundation women's club was formed in 1964 but struggled through the 60s & 70s as the women's student population was too small for the women's sports clubs to prosper until it started to grow in the 80s.

The men's and women's clubs merged in 1990, and with the establishment of University Junior Hockey in 1992, UOWHC has grown to be the largest and most successful club in the Illawarra.

The 'Uni' Family

Entering our 56th year in 2018 the UOWHC has been called home by over 3000 members, with many of this large base having called the club home long after their graduation often playing and administering the club for over 20 or 30 seasons.

This has produced a strong and stable club administration which has been invaluable to UOW in mentoring young students from a wide range of disciplines who have journeyed to Wollongong from regional NSW and overseas. Many International students have embraced the UOWHC as their family during their time abroad.

Our player numbers are the largest in the Illawarra in 2017 fielding 7 Men's teams, 6 Women's and 9 Junior's. Amongst all these teams are a mixture of mothers, fathers, sister brothers, uncles, aunts, cousins and recently grandparents proving we are truly a family club with players from 5 years old up to their late 60s.
