About the Sabre Class:

Welcome to the world of Sabre- the Sabre is one of Australia’s most popular single-handed racing dinghies!

Are you sick of relying on crew to go sailing? Frustrated with having perfect weather but unable to enjoy the day on the water because you are reliant on others to launch? A Sabre is easy to launch single-handedly, eliminating that pesky problem of being unable to sail when the crew is occupied. A Sabre is an easy boat to sail and a difficult boat to master, perfect for a beginner or a master. This class offers learning opportunities, friendly people, and competitive racing.

The Sabre is a one-design class where it is the skill of the skipper that is the ultimate deciding factor. We as a class enjoy great, close racing, without having to compete with mixed-class fleets. Racing is a mixture of ‘scratch’ and handicap; providing a means by which up & coming sailors can get some recognition for their hard work and achievements.

Never races before? We all started somewhere, the fleet is very welcoming and does not intimidate on the racecourse, so come and give it a try. There is a broad range of experience across the fleet, you always find yourself competing against other boat, no matter your current skill level.

You will struggle to find a boat which can be competitively sailed by a more diverse range of people; the current sailing age ranges from young teens through to 80’s, sailors weighting from 45kg-100kg, men and women. These dinghies do not require as much weight, strength or stamina as other single-handed classes, making it far more appealing for juniors and females, allowing these divisions to be competitive in the overall competition.

So, whether you have never sailed before, if you are coming back into sailing after a long break, you want to change gears after years in another class, or you just want great fleet racing – think Sabre!
