PCSA Umpires start as Blues In Training (BiTs) where they learn the basic skills and Rules to progress to higher levels in this aspect of Softball. Leanring is based upong the ability of each member. Traditionally some one coming into Umpiring from scratch will take two seasons (less if they work during the of season)
Initial Training (Field Umpire) consists of :
Rules (Basic Rules at first ie what is safe and what is out? what is a Foul Ball? Who calls Time? etc but starts to include Drop K2 and Infield Fly , Obstruction and Interference)
Umpire Rotation (Where to stand where to move to and when to move there - for this Teeball Games are the best as there is constantly something happening)
Signals and Calls (How to indicate Out, Safe, Foul Ball and spreads to Infield Fly , Dead Ball and Obstruction)
Plate Training (Plate Umpire) consists of:
Initial Training is expanded to include Plate Umpire Signals, Rules and Rotation.
Plate Mechanics (what is a Strike? What is a Ball? How do we judge? How do we signal)
Plate Rotations (where to move to best see a Catch? A Foul Ball? )
It should be stressed that BiTs progress on an individual basis - for example a Representative Player with a wealth of experience will acclimaise to Umpiring faster (in most examples) and thus may only take a single Season to progress to level 1 Accreditation.
