We are pleased to welcome participants to our Adult Learn to Sail Program (Start Crewing) for August 2026. This course will include four sessions, conducted over the dates as listed above. Each session time is 9:00am to 12:30pm. |

|
Training will be conducted on the Club's fleet of Force 24 keelboats, which carry an Instructor and up to four course participants. The boats will be sailed inshore on the water of Newcastle Harbour. The registration fee for this course is $420. |

Member Discounts Current financial NCYC members are offered a discount on training courses - 10% for General Members and 5% for Crew Members. |

Payment Plans & Confirming your Registration We do offer weekly payment plans in order to pay for the course in equal instalments over a nominated period. Please contact the Sailing Office to arrange set up. If you have tentatively booked a place on a course, it is not confirmed unless full payment is received. Full payment must be received 7-days prior to the course commencement date. |

Participant Course Pack
Each participant will receive a pack containing an Introductory Keelboat textbook, an Australian Sailing logbook, and additional information. Your course pack is available to collect from the NCYC Sailing Office once full payment has been received should you wish to do some pre-reading, alternatively you may collect it on the first session of your course. Please contact the Sailing Office should you wish to collect early. |

Course Attendance This is a 4-session course and, in order to satisfy one of the requirements for issue of the certification, you must attend a minimum of 12 hours. If you miss a session, we offer 'Keelboat Catch Up sessions' once a month. An additional registration fee applies. Please see our Academy FAQs for full details and to review Terms & Conditions. |

Course Overview
The first step on the Keelboat pathway introduces you to the basics of sailing on a small keelboat, including boat handling, safety and sailing theory. In the combined course, you will also experience and develop the theory and practical skills to confidently take control on the helm.

Water confident.
Who should do this course?
This course is designed for participants who wish to begin sailing in a keelboat. Learn the basics of crewing and helming, whilst staying relatively dry! All the equipment and gear will be provided by your accredited Discover Sailing Centre.
Course Outcome
You will gain your Start Crewing and Start Helming completion certificate.
