Presidents Address -May 2023

Published Wed 10 May 2023

To Maccabi Basketball friends and family,

I’d like to start by welcoming you all back to another exciting season for our club and community. It’s great to be able to address you at such a successful point for the club, with growth and participation levels continuing to rise.

We are lucky enough to be welcoming a total of 16 NEW TEAMS to our junior ranks, bringing our total to 34 boys, 9 girls and 4 mixed teams. Our member numbers have continued to trend up, which is a testament to the work of our coaches, volunteers and committee members.

Another reflection of the remarkable efforts of our club’s wider community was our recent nomination for the Maccabi Australia national club of the year award. We were privileged to be nominated and subsequently presented with the award, which again talks to the commitment and passion exerted by everyone involved in the functioning of this club. It’s great to see basketball booming around the Jewish community, and we hope to continue to see more and more members pick up and enjoy playing our wonderful sport.

At Maccabi Basketball, we’re constantly aiming to improve the service and level of coaching we offer our members. Among other initiatives, this is achieved through training, feedback and coaching-wide discussions. Last term, our coaching manager Sylvester coordinated a session with NBL legend Bruce Bolden, who discussed offensive and defensive coaching strategies in addition to player management. This initiative was part of our ongoing goal to foster the development and improvement of our junior coaching ranks, to ultimately advance the level of coaching and thus players across the club.

The seniors program at Maccabi Basketball continues to prosper, with 5 teams as well as a social competition currently running. The Maccabi Premier League Lakers, led by senior coach Ben Knight, started the year strongly, finishing on top of the Premier League ladder in the regular season. The Lakers unfortunately fell in the semi-finals after a double OT loss. Our senior’s social competition continues to thrive, promoting basketball among younger adults in the community, who are engaged in a competitive yet social environment on the court. The 2nd edition of the competition for 2023 is commencing soon, capitalising on the immense interest for basketball around the Jewish community at the moment.

Finally, I’d like to thank our sponsors for making all these exciting initiatives possible. They are the backbone of our club and critical to providing our members with a level of quality that is now expected from our club. Our 5 major sponsors for this year are Century 21 – Feller & Taylor, Chargrill Charlie’s, Haben Property Fund, Learn & Laugh and Supa Centa Moore Park. It’s a pleasure to have them as part of our community and we hope our members are able to support them in return.

Thanks for being a part of our great community and I look forward to another successful season ahead.

Kind Regards,

Brad Rosen – Club President
