Dear Maccabi Basketball members, friends, and families,
Firstly, let me start by saying that I have just returned from the Maccabiah games in Israel and what a fantastic event it was. I was able to see a number of basketball games (including watching my daughter win medals in netball) and it was absolutely fantastic. I say to anyone and everyone and please tell your kids as well (junior or senior) that if they have the opportunity, I would thoroughly recommend it.
It’s great to be able to address you all at such a successful point in time for our club and our members. Over the past few years, basketball has grown immensely across Sydney, with our club benefiting greatly as a result.
This can be seen on multiple fronts, including our membership numbers, junior & senior participation rates, and overall enthusiasm for basketball on a number of levels. Currently, Maccabi Basketball consists of over 400 members, across 32 junior and 5 senior teams, a drastic increase from the numbers we were at a couple of years ago. This is a testament to not only the great coaches we’ve managed to recruit and develop but the volunteers that have put their hands up to help drive this club forward, including our committee members and team managers. Our volunteers are key to helping us deliver a great service for all our members and I’d like to thank them for that.
The ease back into normality in 2022 has allowed for the return of our school holiday basketball camps, which have been an overwhelming success for our juniors in the first 2 school holidays of the year. After a great initial return in the term 1 holidays, with our coaches putting on a great camp for all 70 attendees, we were able to back it up with over 100 juniors at our second camp of the year in July. The club is really pleased to have the ability to not only develop and improve the skills of our players during the holidays but put on a camp our members are pleased with and willing to return to. Here’s some feedback we received from a mum of 2 attendees at our most recent camp – “My boys in the U8 & U10 both loved the Maccabi basketball camp. They had so much fun but at the same time developed their skills further. They both came home asking to go again – can’t ask for more!”

Another great success of 2022 thus far has been the introduction of our Maccabi Basketball Social Competition. The social competition was played for the first time in term 2 of this year, aiming to promote basketball in the Jewish community in a fun, active and competitive setting. The competition also capitalised on the growing interest of basketball amidst our community, engaging them in a social yet spirited environment on the court. It was great to see so much interest for the competition in its first season, with 8 teams competing in the 4 a side format at Waverley College.
