Melbourne Softball Association Inc

About

From its inception... ...1982?? That just doesn't seem accurate; softball has an enduring presence at Fawkner Park! Well, not exactly from the very start, but dating back to early 1942 when a league was established to accommodate US troops who engaged in friendly matches against local nurses.

The Rebels and Posties emerged as the pioneering local teams, and in December 1942, they joined forces to establish the Victorian Women’s Softball Association. This association underwent several name changes: Victorian Amateur Softball Council of Victoria, then Victorian Softball Association Inc. and finally adopting the name Softball Victoria.

While this league primarily centred around The Domain and/or Fawkner Park, the Victorian Women’s Softball Association also took on the role of promoting softball across Victoria. Over time, this effort led to the establishment of twenty-four affiliated associations throughout the state. The journey began with Ballarat, Geelong, Horsham, Albury, and Sunshine, eventually encompassing Keilor Park.

By 1982, an agreement was reached to establish the Melbourne Softball Association as an affiliated entity. Simultaneously, the Victorian Softball Association evolved into a representative body for all associations across Victoria. The history of softball at Fawkner Park is rich and extensive, with the likelihood that you, an acquaintance, or a member of the wider community has been involved.

Presently, softball in its various formats is played almost year-round at Fawkner Park. From November to March, the lively Corporate Slowpitch Competition graces the diamond three times a week. Then, from May to September, the park becomes a hub for our Women's Fastpitch League, held on Sunday afternoons.
