Rules 2027

Yes, Australia and NSW Hockey are adopting the new rule framework. Because Australia’s domestic outdoor hockey seasons align closely with the calendar year, Hockey Australia and Hockey NSW integrate new International Hockey Federation (FIH) regulations ahead of major national championships and local winter club competitions.

The transition to the new regulations is rolling out as follows:

The FIH Rules of Hockey formally take effect internationally on November 1, 2026. Because this falls right at the start of the summer/indoor season and directly ahead of the 2027 Australian outdoor season, local associations are applying them to all upcoming 11-a-side formats.

  • Local Leagues: Community clubs and the 27 regional associations across NSW will use the updated rulebook as their baseline template when competitions resume.

2. Major Changes You Will Notice On the Pitch

The rules focus heavily on player safety, streamlining match play, and reducing deliberate delays.

  • The Aerial Ball Contest: You no longer have to wait for an opponent to completely bring down and "control" a raised ball. As long as you gave them their initial 5-metre safety buffer, you can close in and tackle the receiver the exact split-second the ball touches their stick.

  • Penalty Corner Safety Gear: If a defender intercepts the ball during a penalty corner, they can now legally carry or pass the ball outside the shooting circle while still wearing their protective face mask. However, they cannot take a self-pass, and they must shed the equipment at the earliest safe opportunity before leaving the 23-metre area.

  • Goalkeeper Hands: Goalkeepers get a slight defensive buff—their maximum allowed hand protector length is extended by 10mm (up to 365mm) to help defend drag flicks. Goalkeepers are also allowed to intentionally clear or propel the ball away using their arms in any direction.

  • Strict Penalty for Extra Players: Team benches must be more disciplined. If an extra player accidentally steps onto the pitch and materially impacts active play, the umpire will issue a mandatory yellow card to the team captain.
  •
  • Mandatory Clock Stops: To eliminate tactical time-wasting, official match clocks must instantly pause the moment a goal is successfully awarded. Half-time intervals are also standardized to 10 minutes. (Bathurst Association do not do time out and may choose to play 5 minutes halves)

3. Off-Field Admin Rule: Mandated Registration

Separate from the on-field gameplay rules, Hockey Australia has introduced a mandatory structural rule. Every single coach, umpire, and technical official in NSW and across Australia must be formally registered via their local club's RevSport portal, even if they already hold a primary registration as a regular player. (Bathurst Association will require all these persons to have a Working with Children NSW up to date number and expiry date on their registration)
