OUR ORIGINS

In late 2003, a group of women expressed an interest in establishing a Geelong group of Dragons Abreast. Aftrer travelling to Melbourne each week for training, these women competed with the Melbourne Dragons Abreast team in the International Dragon boat festival in 2004. At the end of 2004 the Dragons Abreast Geelong club was established that enables people to particpate weekly on the beautiful Barwon River. We have a partnership with the Geelong Canoe Club and use their facilites at Balyang Reserve.

Early supporter Nanette was first diagnosed in 2000 and after recovery was delighted to discover Dragons Abreast Geelong. Nanette became an "enthusiastic" paddler. Nanette praised the group for being supportive, jovial and eclectic.

In 2007, The International Dragons Abreast Regatta was held in Coloundra, and Dragons Abreast Geelong needed a logo and design for our racing tops to compete. That's where Ruby our cheeky logo came alive. Ruby originated from Nanette's innocent sketch, which is the team's logo to this day. Ruby is also the name of our dearly loved boat.

Deni, one of our original members, came up with the name Juggernauts, meaning that not only are we a force to be reckoned with on the water, but some of us have two jugs, one or nought.

Our mantra  'Om Mani Padme Hum' is a Tibetian chant, which is displayed on the sleeve of our racing tops, meaning ' The jewel is in the Lotus'
