Croquet Overview

Croquet is an enjoyable outdoor game that mixes skill, strategy, and a bit of gentle competition. Many people describe it as a cross between snooker and chess - only played on grass. You can play on your own (singles) or with a partner (doubles).

Players use a mallet to hit their ball through a series of hoops in the correct order. The aim is simple: run more hoops than your opponents. You can also knock other balls out of the way if it helps your team. The fun comes from choosing the right angles, planning ahead, and outsmarting the other side.

Croquet at Our Club

We play three versions of the game: Golf Croquet, Association Croquet, and Ricochet Croquet. All are played on the same size grass court with six hoops and a central peg. Games use one of two sets of coloured balls, and can be played as singles or doubles.

No matter the version, the goal is always to score the most hoops within the game’s time limit.

Golf Croquet

Golf Croquet is the most popular and easiest version to learn. Each player takes one shot at a time, and everyone competes for the same hoop before moving on to the next. Games are quick, interactive, and full of tactical choices. Two groups can even share the same court by using different coloured balls.

Association Croquet

Association Croquet is the traditional form of the game. It’s more strategic and allows players to earn extra shots by hitting other balls or running hoops. Skilled players can run several hoops in one turn. Games take longer and involve more planning, making it a favourite for those who enjoy deeper strategy.

Ricochet Croquet

Ricochet is an Australian-developed version designed to be easier to learn than Association Croquet while keeping the strategy. Players can earn extra shots by hitting other balls, but the rules are simpler. It’s often used as a stepping stone for players who want to move on to Association Croquet
