Sweet Caroline

The Grammarians have marked marked a special moment with the christening of its newest boat, a versatile quad/four, as “Sweet Caroline”.

The name carries deep meaning for the Club, rooted in both tradition and remembrance. Since BGRC’s early days, the annual Head of the Yarra in Melbourne has been a defining event. After the intensity of racing, crews come together in celebration, and one song above all others has become synonymous with that shared experience — Sweet Caroline. It captures the camaraderie, relief and joy that follow a season of hard work on the water.

The name also honours Caroline Davis, a talented and much-loved cox who was a familiar and respected figure within the Brisbane rowing community. Caroline’s energy, kindness and presence left a lasting impression on all who knew her. Her tragic passing was deeply felt across the Club and beyond.

In naming the boat “Sweet Caroline”, BGRC recognises both the spirit of the sport and the memory of a remarkable young woman. It is a name that reflects life in all its dimensions — challenge, commitment, friendship and loss — and one that will be carried forward with pride, both on the water and in song.

We were honoured that Caroline's parents, XXXX & Richard (a BGS Old Boy) attended this morning's naming ceremony, with Richard doing the honours.
