Kashgar Cup

Kashgar Cup

This Cup is awarded annually to the DA Canberra member who has made an extraordinary contribution to the work of DA Canberra.

It was introduced late in 2006 after Penny Birtles (long-time DA ACT member and later a member of DA Sydney), Judy Richmond and her husband Tim were travelling together along the Chinese part of the Silk Road during September–October. At Kashgar in far north-west China, Penny and Judy saw this small pink jade teapot, embellished with silver dragons, at a market stall. They thought it would be great to bring something back to DA ACT with real Chinese dragons.

  • With the Committee’s approval to introduce this award, the Kashgar Cup was initially awarded to Lyn Langer in October 2006 for her sterling work in heading up/managing the 2006 DA ACT Challenge Regatta while doing a wonderful job as Treasurer.
  • In 2007, Judy Richmond was the lucky recipient.
  • In 2008, the Cup was awarded to Joy Tonkin for her extraordinary efforts in writing successful grant submissions for the baby boat “Gecko” and subsequently, for a trailer. Joy also managed all the logistics involved in ordering and getting the boat from the factory in Germany, through containerisation, freight handlers and Customs to Lotus Bay.
  • In 2009, Cheryl Brower awarded the Kashgar Cup for her work with the 2009 DA Challenge.
  • In 2010, Boerge Alexander awarded the Kashgar Cup for her work with the 2010 DA Challenge.
  • In 2011, awarded to Marion Blake for all of her hard work and dedication to DA ACT.
  • In 2012, it was awarded to Di Bradshaw, a most deserving recipient for all that she has done for DA.
  • In 2013, Patsy Sheales receives the Kasghar Cup from Di Bradshaw for her work as Coordinator and Assistant Coordinator.
  • In 2014, awarded to Anne Baynes for her work in getting June’s bench installed and her contribution as Secretary to the DAC Committee.
  • In 2015, awarded to Donna Lennon. Donna has been doing the “Who’s Paddling Coordinator role” for more than two years and receiving hundreds of emails! After some discussion to find a more streamline approach, Donna set up the Doodle online system which we are not only using for the paddling numbers but also for our social events. It has made life a whole lot easier for all.
  • In 2016, the awardees were the Wanniassa Come and Try trio, Elly McGinness, Maureen Wild and Clare Purcell, who have worked together since September 2013 finding new members. They have managed this role extremely well and have communicated the message of life after breast cancer via dragon boating widely through various media and networks. (Citation)
