2025 Bundaberg Closed Wrap-Up (5–7 September)

Published Thu 11 Sep 2025

The 2025 Bundaberg Closed Championships brought three full days of competition, community, and outstanding table tennis. This year, 55 players took part across 34 events—a small drop in participation from last year (62), but an increase in opportunities compared to the 32 events held in 2024. By including more junior, age, and rating categories, members were able to test themselves in fresh ways and enjoy more chances to compete.

Key Highlights:

  • Men’s Open Singles: Braydon Chapman claimed the title for the first time after an unforgettable final against Brett Fourro. Braydon led 3–1, saw Brett fight back to 3–3, before holding his nerve to win 14–12 in the deciding seventh game.

  • Women’s Open Singles: Ha Bui successfully defended her title in a strong round robin performance.

  • Standout Season for Susan McDonald: Playing just two events, Susan finished runner-up in the Women’s Open Singles and won the Under 1050 Singles.

  • Doubles Excellence: The Fourro family continued their dominance, taking out the Open Doubles (John & Brett), Open Mixed Doubles, and Over 60 Doubles (John & Lorraine).

  • Rising Star: Janiru Hewamadduma showed remarkable improvement, especially under pressure at crucial points, winning the Under 13, Under 15 Boys, Under 17, Under 1300 Doubles, and Junior Open Doubles titles.

The Bundaberg Closed is not only a celebration of competition but also an important part of the club’s growth. With no prize money on offer, player entry fees play a vital role in supporting the club’s financial position and reinvesting in equipment, facilities, and programs to ensure a safe and effective training environment for all members.

On behalf of Bundaberg Table Tennis, thank you to every player, volunteer, and supporter who made the 2025 Bundaberg Closed possible. Your participation helps keep our sport thriving. We look forward to welcoming even more members and competitors next year as we continue to build a strong, vibrant table tennis community in Bundaberg.
