Course Overview

'Tackers' is an Australian Sailing national program for kids between the ages of 7-12. It is aimed at introducing children to sailing in a fun, safe way within a three-level format. All courses are conducted by fully qualified Australian Sailing Instructors & Assistant Instructors and Bellerive Yacht Club is an accredited Discover Sailing Centre.

Tackers 1 is designed for kids with no sailing experience, they will learn the basics of sailing through activities on and off the water. This is a 9-week course running each Sunday morning for a 3 hour session, allowing sailors a hands-on experience and introducing all the elements essential for them to build the skills required as they progress throughout the course.

The course uses Optimist dinghies, provided by Bellerive Yacht Club. Optis are specifically designed for children learning to sail. Although Life Jackets are provided to each sailor, all children should be able to confidently swim 50 meters. You will receive an email upon registration with additional information on what to wear and bring along to the Bellerive Yacht Club Tackers Course.

Course Prerequisites

• Water confident
• 7-12 years-old

Who should do this course?

This course is designed for participants who wish to have fun and learn the basics of sailing through games on and off the water.

Course Outcome

By the end of the Tackers 1 course, the participants will be able to:

• Steer with tiller extension under towing paddling power
• Tie a figure 8 knot, round twice and two half hitches
• Tack (push turn)
• Gybe (pull turn)
• Reach around a figure of 8 course using both tacking and gybing
• Sail with tiller extension
• Sail upwind and downwind by following the safety boat

You will gain your Tackers 1 completion certificate.
