32nd WLSC Annual General Meeting

The 32nd Annual General Meeting of Wenty Leagues Squash Club was held on Monday, 2 June 2025, at Wenty Leagues Club in the Blaxland East Room, with 41 registered members in attendance.

Opening of the Meeting
President John Musumeci opened the meeting with a light-hearted welcome and confirmed that a quorum was present. He gave a brief overview of the agenda and acknowledged the effort of members in attending and supporting the governance of the club.

Apologies
Formal apologies were received from Mark De Luca, Sam Farrugia, Mark Forland, Trevor Ryan, Dave Seguna, Brett Davis, and Michael Schultz. Additional apologies were noted from the floor, including John Granata, Ninette Dilly, Clive Aviet, and Than Truong.

Conflict of Interest Declaration
Danny Hedges, Club Treasurer, declared a conflict of interest as the financial accounts are prepared by his company, Hedges Financial Services.

Confirmation of Previous Minutes
The minutes of the 2024 AGM had been made available on the club website in advance. With no objections raised, the minutes were adopted unanimously following a motion from John Bennett and seconding from Graeme Potter.

Business Arising from Previous AGM
No outstanding matters were identified. Members were asked to raise any issues, but none were brought forward.

President’s Report
John Musumeci delivered a detailed report reflecting on 2024. Key highlights included:

  • 45 members participating in the Club Championships
  • Two coaching clinics held in February and August
  • CPR training for 10 members
  • Social Day 5.0 & 6.0 events in April & October and a July Social Night 1.0
  • Inter-club challenges with Canterbury in July and Toongabbie in November
  • Rules Night in September with guest presenter Ben Miller
  • A highly successful Year-End Celebration on 28 November with 62 attendees
  • With the major highlight, the 60th Anniversary Celebration on 1 June with special guest, former World No. 1 Squash player, Mr Geoff Hunt.

He also noted the club’s evolving digital presence, online registration, and improved communication, before thanking committee members, Wenty Leagues Club, and the wider membership.

Treasurer’s Report
Danny Hedges presented audited financials for the year ending 31 December 2024. The club started the year with $73,614.23 and ended with $66,372.87. Main sources of income included grants from Wenty Leagues Club, member contributions (including the 60th Anniversary Dinner), and interest.

Danny clarified an accounting anomaly regarding advertising expenses and explained the differences between his detailed internal reports and the auditor’s summarised version. There were no objections to the report.

Club Captain’s Report
Wendy Fox reported on team performance across all four divisions, noting that several teams reached the finals, and that Wenty 1 in Division 1 had an especially strong showing. Her report summarised the competitive year and club participation throughout 2024.

Adoption of the New Constitution
Vice President Rob Spooner presented the updated club constitution, expanded from 7 to 21 pages. He explained the need to align with Fair Trading and Wenty Leagues Club’s governance framework. Key changes included:

  • Introduction of a new 'social member' category
  • Formalising three ordinary committee roles as voting members
  • Requirement for member approval on honorariums

The updated constitution was adopted by a show of hands.

Honorariums and Transparency Note
A motion was passed to approve $100 honorariums for each committee member for 2025–26. John also disclosed the $330 annual fee paid to Hedges Financial Services and confirmed this had been properly declared. Transparency and cost-effectiveness were emphasised.

Election of 2025–26 Committee
Returning officer George Roux conducted the election:

  • President: John Musumeci (unopposed)
  • Vice President: Rob Spooner (unopposed)
  • Treasurer: Danny Hedges (unopposed)
  • Secretary: Bernard Worsley (unopposed)
  • Club Captain: Graham Mitchell (unopposed)
  • Vice-Captain: Wendy Fox (unopposed)
  • Selector: Contested by Trevor Ryan, Rob Cole, and Gillian Kirby. A tie led to a second round of voting, resulting in Trevor Ryan’s election.

Patron Appointment
Ian McCann, President of Wenty Leagues Club, was reappointed as Patron of the Squash Club. Although unable to attend due to other commitments, his ongoing support was acknowledged.

Special Presentation – Tribute to Chris Mitrovich
A tribute was made to outgoing Club Captain Chris Mitrovich, who stepped down after 16 years. A hand drawing was presented by George Roux and personal reflections from Wendy Fox celebrated his long-standing commitment to the club. A formal presentation to Chris was scheduled for later that week.

General Business (Pre-Submitted Questions)
John addressed questions submitted in advance. Topics included:

  • Flexibility for finals rescheduling to accommodate State of Origin
  • Confirmation of Spring Pennant fees
  • AGM registration procedures
  • Preferred communication methods for members
  • Update on Northmead Court Manager’s Lease ending on 31 July 2025

Rob Spooner defended the current reserves policy and explained that the club prefers to use of WLSC members than external substitutes. This remains a key principle of club culture, governance and is included in the Wenty Leagues Squash Club’s Constitution.

General Business (Questions from the Floor)
During this portion of the meeting, a series of questions from the floor sparked a heated discussion. Topics included the reserves policy, competitive fairness, and the exclusion of a women’s championship in 2024. While opinions were divided, it was acknowledged that some issues would be revisited by the committee in the coming months.

John concluded with a brief overview of upcoming events, including:

  • Maurie Wheatley Handicap Tournament in July
  • Social Night 3.0 Wednesday 23 July
  • Inter-Club Challenge away with Bulldogs Saturday 12 July
  • Player’s Clinic 6.0 on Sunday 3 August.
  • Spring Pennant Competition – starts 6 August with GF Night 26 November.
  • Rules Night 2025 Monday 22 September.

Lucky Door Prize
Wendy Fox hosted the Lucky Door Prize draw, awarding two $20 Wenty Leagues Club gift cards to attending members.

Meeting Close
The meeting concluded at 9:07 PM. Members were invited to stay for supper and refreshments using their drink vouchers.
