Vale Donald 'Nutsy' Martin

Published Sun 27 Jun 2021

It is with a very heavy heart that we inform our community about the passing of our Number 1 Club Supporter and Life Member, Donald 'Nutsy' Martin. Donald passed away on 17 June 2021, aged 91, surrounded by his family.

Many know Don from his very successful baseball career with the Prospect Baseball Club, North Adelaide in the Night Baseball, and Baseball SA. He also represented SA and Australia in Baseball.

Don's first introduction to our club was his appointment as A Grade Coach when the club was still called the Northern Districts Softball Club. It was during his time at the Club, Don met his beloved late wife Heather.

Don and Heather had two children, Russell and Linda who are both Life Members of the Club as well.

While Linda was playing for the Cats in the 80s, Heather and Don ramped up their selfless commitment to our club. It was fitting that the Best Club Person perpetual trophy was named in honour of Don in the 1982-83 season. Don was the enigma of a 'Club Person'. Heather and Don served on the Committee, consistently came out to many club days and events and Don always loved to chat to many out at West Beach when watching the Cats play. Don loved a good heckle and many members who have moved clubs to the Cats comment that it was always a lot better playing for the Cats when Don was in the crowd! Don was well known amongst many in the Softball community but always happily introduced himself to those he didn't know as well.

The Walkerville Softball Club sends our condolences to Russell, Linda and Mandy who are members of our club. We also send our condolences to Don's extended family as well.

It will not be the same down at West Beach without our Number 1 Supporter, Nutsy.
